@Bluebonnet: Yes I would still have paid maternity leave bc it goes by hours worked. Jobs in my area aren’t easy to find but I’m sure I could find something even if it’s not in my field to get by. This job would definitely boost my skills but I think it’s a job I would want to stay at!

@crazydoglady: @shantuck: I guess you never know how long it will take to conceive! I was just shocked how quick it was the first time was so I just assumed it could happen that fast with #2. We’ll see!! Hopefully if it does happen right away, I can find another job after mat leave if I can’t stay at the potential job I want. I just worry about the worst case scenario then we would be screwed without an income!

@MsBAM: Would you have paid maternity leave if you accepted this job and got pregnant immediately? If you got this job and went on leave and weren’t hired for a permanent position, how hard would it to find another job? Would this contract job boost your skills/experience in any way that would help you take a step closer to what you want to do long term? Or make you more marketable for future jobs?

I’m week #2 into my new job and I’m actively TTC #3. Life is too short to work at a job you hate and it’s also too short to not have the family you want to have. I’ll figure it out if I end up pregnant....

I'm camp TTC and go from there. I got pregnant 3x the first month trying (2 ended in loss) and then it took nearly a year to get pregnant with this baby. You just never know.

@MsBAM: I did something similar and put off TTC due to a job change and now I wish I wouldn't have. I got pregnant on the first try with my daughter but it hasn't been easy the second time around. Long story short - it's been about a year and I'm still not pregnant. We wanted kids 2 years apart and now we're looking at 3+ years apart.

You just have to decide if you want to prioritize having a great job or having kids closer together. Good luck figuring it all out - trying to plan life around TTC can be stressful

@skinnycow: @psw27: @desertdreams88: I know there’s no guarantee but I got pregnant on the first try with my first baby. I know that might not happen for #2. I’m thinking of applying anyways then if I get it, decide then. This job would be a step up in terms of finances and it’s supposed to be a pretty good place to work. If I were to get the job, the concern is that it’s a contract position to start. So if I don’t get permanent by the time I go on mat leave (if all goes as planned), then they don’t technically have to hire me back.

As long as it didn't upset my insurance, finances, etc. too much - I would apply for the job and TTC. You never know if you'll get the job, like the job, how quickly you'll get pregnant, etc.

I am of the mindset that during ttc, pregnancy and the 1st year of babyhood, you stay at your job, due to FMLA, STD insurance, and keeping the same healthcare plan (deductible, OOP max) That's my financial mindset, obvi affected by US policy.

Unless you really hate your job.

Are there clear financial benefits or disadvantages one way or another?

If it were me, I would take the risk and TTC. There's no guarantee you'll get pregnant quickly/get the job you want.

@Becky: @PollyWog: It doesn’t say when the job starts but the posting closes at the beginning of August. That was actually my plan, to get pregnant a few months in then I would be able to do the entire contract. We were thinking of TTC end of Sept. I’m not sure how long it will take to get permanent bc my friend who works there said that have several people on contract right now. I’m worried that if I’m pregnant but still complete my contract, they will forget about me while I’m on mat leave (1year in Canada) and not bother hiring me back.

My job is the same way. Four of us got pregnant while temporary. Three were hired permanently. In my experience, if they want you then they will make it work. But I'm in the US and my job offers zero maternity leave or short term disability

When does the contract start? Can you wait to TTC until a few months in so you don’t actually go on leave until after your one year is up? If you know when permanent placement is typically granted I would aim to still be at work then (even if you’re close to your due date). They can’t not hire you just because you’re pregnant.

Hi all!

So DH and I have decided we are probably ready to TTC number 2 in a few months. I returned to work from mat leave a few months ago. I have a permanent job I’ve been at for years. I’ve been wanting a new job and applying for new jobs since I was on mat leave. Here’s the dilemma: there’s currently a place I want to apply at that’s hiring a one year contract (this is the way this place hires, you do your time on contract then eventually get permanent). If I got this job, this could throw off our plans to TTC. I’m worried if I got hired then went on mat leave after the contract finishes that they might not hire me back. So would you apply for the job anyways and still TTC during the contract? Would you stay at your permanent job and TTC then find a new job after mat leave? Or would you take the risk if it’s a job you really want and continue plans of TTC? It would be nice to have LO’s close in age..
