Thank you for all your replies. I have read each and every one several times. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply, things here have just been really hectic.

The point of this thread was to give myself a reality check - that actually nobody's kid sleeps like my ideal and I need to stop wanting the impossible. But actually the replies indicate that its not unrealistic at all! But how do we get there?!

To answer @Anagram: , E usually goes down pretty easy at night. We did CIO to achieve that one. There are often some tears but the crying is short lived most nights and she falls asleep around 6.30-7pm. Then the wake ups start around 10pm and number anywhere from one to umm several times during the night. She has always woken in the night and popping her dummy (paci) back in used to do the trick.... but since she was about 11 months she has had one wake up per night (sometimes its the only wake up, sometimes one of several) where she throws the dummy across the room and continues to cry until we get her up - and lately only a bottle of warm milk can get her relaxed enough to go back to sleep. Then she is up for the day any time between 5.30-6.30am.

We decided last night after reading these that we would do CIO for night wakings. Last night, she screamed for an hour between 4am and 5am then went back to sleep. Then tonight she screamed and screamed until I picked her up.... and discovered her nappy had leaked, soaking her PJs, sleep sack and sheet. Once she was dry, she went back to sleep easily and I just felt awful.....

So, yeah, we've got a long way to go but it could be much worse I know. Your replies have been great to read - and give me hope for the near future too!

Yes , DD is 27 months. She has bath, lotion, pjs and books and then we put her in the crib with white noise and say goodnight. She goes down at 8.30 and wakes up anywhere between 6 and 7.30.

She used to wake up at 5am all the time, but seems to be better now thank goodness but she has always gone right to sleep usually talking and singing to herself and she has always STTN.

Naps on the other hand have become a total nightmare lately.

Consistently - 7 nights a week.
12 months old this weekend. Same routine every day..
In bed between 7:00-7:30 and sleeps until 6:30-7:00.

No fighting going down, if he cries I just grab him and then try again in 10 minutes. It's worked amazingly for us. If he's sick or having a really hard time with teeth he might wake up once in the night.

Yes, consistently. DS has always been a good sleeper. His bedtime is 7:30 (at 20 months), and he sleeps until anywhere between 7-8am. He almost always wakes up happy/talking/playing.

I voted yes, mostly. We sleep trained at 5 months after 6 weeks of sleep hell and since then DS has been a pretty great sleeper. At 16 mo he is sleeping 7pm - 7am. Usually doesn't wake up at all but if he does its usually due to teething. So we give motrin, rock him and put him back to bed without much resistance.

My lo is 28 months and goes to bed at 8/ 8:30, we just tell her to go hop in bed and unless she is really sick she goes right to bed, sometimes she sits there and talks to her sister for a bit but usually just goes to sleep. She always stays in bed until around 6/6:30 unless something/someone wakes her up.

Yes! We are blessed with an excellent sleeper. My nearly 26 month old consistently sleeps from 8pm - 7:30/8am every day. Our bedtime routine isn't too long, either. Sit on the potty, have a vitamin, brush teeth, diaper/pj change, bed. It takes about 10 mins. :)

Yes, this is us except that she is an early riser in the morning. The past few days she has woken up after 6am (around 6:20), and it's been downright heavenly. If you have a kid who sleeps 12 horus per night, you are lucky.

Yep, basically always, but I'm not under any false impression that its because of my parenting at all. I just got super lucky. The current routine is bath, teeth, book, bed. If we're out late it's just teeth and bed. She's normally asleep within the first 5-10 minutes. She goes to bed at 7:30-8 and is up around 9:30.

My second kid is going to give me a seriously painful wake up call about parenting.

We were somewhere in the consistently/mostly range from about 6 months-22 months (with teething and vacations messing things up for a week or so here and there). For the last 3 months, we've been in the ocassionally/never range (see previous posts with pleas for help). I am really hoping that we will out grow this phase soon and/or it will get better once the last 2 molars are in. Part of me thinks we should just do the switch to a big bed now since we aren't sleeping much anyway but am sure it would result in even less sleep so we'll stick with the crib for a bit longer.

LO just turned 2, and he has consistent sleep. We'll take him up around 8pm to start his bedtime routine of bath and reading. He's in his crib by 9pm and will either fall right to sleep or will arrange his animals and fall asleep shortly afterwards. He sleeps consistently until 8am.

There are times when he's teething that he will wake up in the middle of the night and I'll have to get up to sooth him a bit, but for the most part, it's 9pm-8am.

LO is 17month. at 8:00pm, she happily marches down to her dark bedroom with DH and snuggles with him 2-3 min. DH drops her in her crib and she just sleeps until 6:30-7:00am. She has been doing this since she was 13 month. There were 2-3 night wakes but mostly she sleeps through the night.

Yes. It was entirely consistently until a few weeks ago when we got rid of DD's binkies. Now she often wakes once between 5 and 6 AM crying. We go in, shush her, turn on her white noise, and then step out of her room again. She'll typically fall back asleep until 7-8 AM after that. I'm hoping to go all the way back to our former ideal sleep pattern soon, once she learns how to put herself back to sleep without her binky.

Now ask me about naps... those are most certainly not the ideal. Not even close.

Yes, always, but Xander has always been an easy baby when it comes to sleep.

19 months. Bedtime is between 6:00 and 7:00, depending on his nap. We just tell him it's time for bed, brush his teeth, give him his inhaler (that one's new), diaper change, pjs, and put him in bed with his blankets, turn on his white noise, and say "Good night, Xander! See you in the morning!" and then turn off the lights and leave. He sleeps until 6:30/7:00 a.m.

It was like this until the last few months :( DD is 22 months and now she has 8 teeth coming in and they have been taking their very sweet time. It has completely screwed her sleep up. It was 7pm-7am consistently with no wake ups. Now she goes down between 7:30-9 and wakes between 6:45-8am but there might be 1-4 wake ups at night. And at least one of those wakeups require picking her up and rocking her for a bit.

@BandDmommy: See, this is why I fear the toddler bed! LO's sleep is glorious, but we are expecting #2 in April, so realistically we need to work towards a move probably by Feb/March at the latest.

To answer the question, sleep has been pretty great since sleep training at 3 months, aside from setbacks with teething/illness.

LO will be one on Wednesday and she has been sleeping through the night since she was about 6 months old. We've had bad nights when teeth were coming in. When we moved her to her own room, I still rocked and nursed to sleep. When we started to night wean, we switched up our routine and I nursed earlier in the routine. Now, unless she is really tired or teeth are bothering her, she will get hugs and kisses, we prayer, and I put her in bed. She has her loveys that she sleeps with and she usually rolls over to her tummy when I leave the room.

Yes, consistently. LO is 14 months and has been STTN since 12.5 months when I night-weaned. In bed and asleep by 7pm and sleeps through until around 7:30.

Things were awesome before we switched to big bed. He slept from 8 pm to 8 am. He now sleeps from 8 pm to 6 am. At 6 am he joins us in our bed for another hour or so.

It's 50/50 whether there's a motn waking. Otherwise, they go down fine with maybe a single cry or two when we walk out but are asleep within 5 mins. Wake-up time in the morning varies but within 5 mins of being awake, they let us know, ha. As for sttn, sometimes yes (7:15 pm to anywhere from 5:00-6:30am), sometimes up between 3-4 am for a bottle of milk. It's not ideal but it's SO much better than what it was a few months ago, so I'm rolling with it. Mine are 16 months.
