@Corduroy: we went to 3 Honda dealerships before we found someone we could work with! We knew we wanted a Honda so we just shopped around, we liked the guy so much we have purchased our last 3 cars through him!

Definitely file a complaint about that Kia dude. That is not Ok.

We just bought a car and had to drag our toddler with us but the salesman was a dad so he was really family oriented. One thing we did was shop online and over the phone before getting there. My husband had already mostly decided what he wanted me to get so that made it easier too. I didn't want the trouble of putting the car seat in so I test drove by myself but I would think they'd have to understand if you wanted to do that or take separate test drives.

We also purchased our last car through the Costco program. It was great! We got a decent price with very little effort. I would definitely recommend it.

@Corduroy: we bought a used car in the fall and went to a bunch of dealerships. Not one salesperson batted an eye when I said I had to install the car seat before a test drive. Sometimes just DH test drove and I just hung back with the toddler if we didn't want to take the time to move the seat but it was important to me that the seat installed easily anyway. Seriously not a single one seemed to think it was strange at all. You'd think if you are selling MINIVANS of all cars, you'd understand that!

@lawbee11: We bought our last two cars through the Costco program. It was the first time buying a new car for us and I thought it was a good experience. I personally liked my Honda sales woman over my DH's Toyota salesman. Nothing creepy about him though.

We bought our most recent car through the Costco auto program and it was super easy. Almost everything was done via email. Best car-buying experience I've had.

@Corduroy: @Ms. RV: this is a good idea and is what my husband did before we went to dealerships last year. We just got lucky at the two places we went to and found people who weren't too pushy or crazy like the first one sounded.

It is definitely a hard gig to be a car salesperson and be good at it, but I would still say something to that employee's supervisor or to them so that they have some feedback. Then I would not go back to that dealership or if I did make sure it was a different salesperson. I can't handle people being pushy or rude like that. I also usually take a bit of time to decide about things and would prefer if someone wasn't calling me to harass me.

If you don't like the person you get you can always request someone else or just go back another time (I know that sucks if you are reluctant to get to the dealership or your hubby is).

My trick is to go online, work with the internet sales person to get a quote (and work down to a price you want), print out the e-mail. Then go to the dealership and when someone approaches you say you already have your numbers worked out already. I feel like the sales person doesn't feel as pressured then because you've already shown interest in the car.

And I can commiserate on bad dealership experiences... I once had a sales person ask me if my husband would have to make the final call before I decided on a car to buy when I went to a dealership alone.

I used to work car sales and my husband is a service manager at one. That honestly is the craziest thing I've ever heard and am not sure what kind of dealerships you went to. I would not return to either one, unless the next dealership is like a 2 hour drive away or something. If you want a good sales person go ask one of the service advisors which one they would recommend.

I would call the manager and tell him that I am interested in this car but would like to go on a day that X employee was not there. I'm sure the manager would be more Han willing to accommodate you. Or, just show up and ask a different salesperson to help you. We went to the Nissan dealership a handful of times and no one really remembered us enough to know who we were working with.

As far as the guy asking you to test drive with your baby...he probably doesn't have babies. i can understand why it would sound crazy for him to suggest that, but maybe he honestly doesn't know better. My brother wanted to move my car out of the way to let my sister out of the driveway and took my son with him. I had to run after him because he didn't see the big deal. I think it might just be one of those things that people don't notice until they are in the situation. :/

Good luck :)

Oh, I would also recommend moving the car seat to the car during your test drive. It's a pain, but you really should see how you like the car with the car seat in it. We had to see if we were okay with the spacing between the car seat and driver side before we bought our car :)

@bluestriped bee: I definitely will test drive before we buy but we didn't get to that point today. We were running out of time before we had to go pick LO1 up from daycare. I wanted DH to try it really fast before we left because getting him to car shop is a PITA.

Ugh! Kia guy would have pissed me off.

It sounds like a bit a work if you really wanted to test drive it, but could you have moved your car seat from your own car to the car you wanted to buy? I've purchased a car and I definitely would recommend doing a test drive. If I didn't want to deal with moving the car seats, I would have asked to do two test drives. One with the DH drives the car and I stay back at the office with the baby and then switch when DH returns. (If that is possible without disturbing the baby.)

As for your question, you could tell them that you are just looking and come back another time. I don't think there's a way to find good car salesman. Well, unless you look on yelp and see if anyone recommends a certain salesmen, but even then I could see it being relative.

Wow...just wow. The first guy sounds creepy enough (and a bit unstable), but the second guy not seeing anything wrong with you taking your infant for a ride in the car in just an Ergo?!? I have no words...

And on that note, I'm sorry I have no words of advice, but I was just too dumbfounded not to reply!

DH and I are trying to make a decision about which minivan to buy. Today we visited Kia & Honda.

The guy that approached us at Kia was AWFUL. He knew nothing about the vehicles. Made generally annoying comments. Told us he was desperate to make a sale but didn't listen to what we wanted. Then he got frustrated and accused us of being secret shoppers. He said we had to tell him if we were (because calling us out would be a path to getting a good review?). Dude, we're dragging a 4 month old around in the heat. We're not doing this to kill time or for fun. DH and I decided we couldn't buy a car from this guy. The guy asked DH for his number, DH said he'd take the guy's card but wouldn't give our number. The guy blew up and called that offensive and like a death. So now instead of just not wanting to buy from this guy I also want to call his boss and tell him how off putting he was.

The guy at Honda was a much better salesman but he could not understand why I wouldn't take a test drive with DS in the Ergo. "Surely you could sit in the passenger seat for the short test drive." SMH.

Are there tricks to getting good sales associates? I hate they way they claim you when you walk on the lot.
