For our particular situation, buying was better since rental costs are high where we live. But the difference is small, just $200 a month anyway, so buying and renting are really almost the same----the only thing that would make buying come out on top would be if we make a decent profit when we sell. But sometimes my DH talks about selling (since the market is so nuts) and renting, but I think that is a crazy idea. This calc helps to make some sense of what he is saying.
