Car seats also have an expiration, so you'll need to check the manufacturer and model details to make sure it's something you can still use.

Good stuff. I know the importance of keeping a child rear-facing, I just wasn't sure the details -how long, what type of carseat, etc. I'll have to check out the one my friends left us - learn all about it!

@redsmarties: Once your lo grows out of the infant seat (or sometimes from birth depending on the convertible size requirements) they'll move to a convertible carseat. Most all convertible carseats can be installed rear-facing along with forward facing & are safe rear-facing until the child reaches the max height/weight restrictions on the specific carseat. Your manual should tell you what it's max requirements are. Sitting rear-facing as long as the child is able helps reduce the risk of internal decapitation in an accident!.. I know it sounds so harsh, but that is why the recommendation has changed. Our Combi is good rear facing until P is I think 35" tall... which at 27" tall at 12 months & G being just a bit over 45" at 9 I'm sure she'll be fine in it rear facing for a loooooong time.

This one's pretty short and straight forward. Plus, it's an animation, so it's a little easier to watch.

There's a lot of crash test videos on Youtube. Just search rear facing. I don't want to link any here because even with the crash test dummies, it's just so graphic. But videos speak louder than words.

After they outgrow the infant car seat you put them in a convertible car seat and you should rear face it as long as possible. As long as it is not a "booster" (booster with a back, and sometimes a harness), it should rear face. If you read on the car seat it should give instructions on how to install forward facing as well as rear facing.

With this being our first LO, and not being around a whole lot of (young) kids, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to rear-facing carseats.

I guess I had always assumed that the child sits rear-facing in their infant bucket seat, and then when they outgrow the infant seat, you put them in a regular seat that faces forward. But I'm hearing more and more that rear-facing is better for longer, and I'm just curious.

Do most carseats (convertible) face back and forward? We were given one that our good friends bought last year (and moved countries), and their little one was 18 months-2.5 years old in it, always rear-facing.

Can someone give me a little insight?
