I'm late to this, but the Britax boulevard Clicktight is the longest lasting RF seat on the market right now and fits pretty well in a smaller car. The maxi Cosi pria 70 takes up less space and lasts a long time RF too.

The chicco Nextfit is shorter front to back than most- that's why we got it for our old car. Because you adjust the angle within the base it takes up less space. Still pretty clunky and maybe wider than some though. Very high rf limits.

@Somebunny: I'm not sure. Now that I think about it...LO 2 is still RF behind the driver's seat. We should swap her with LO 1 who is FF behind the passenger seat! :-)

@autumnlove: Which Britax did seats did you have?

@looch: Yes, that would be an option if we found a slim enough seat for the passenger side. Our Britax is pretty chunky.

Our Foonfs should be here soon and I'm about to figure this out for myself. I have 10.5 month old twins so they will both be rearfacing for a long time. I'm nervous about the front to back space most convertibles take up as well. We plan to put one baby in the middle and one behind the passenger. The middle is apparently safest so I think this is supposed to be "better" than two outboard seats.

Look for shorter convertible carseats. The Britax Roundabout is shorter than the Britax Marathon. We have a Roundabout in the backseat of a small sedan and it works perfectly.

The Radian takes a LOT of space front to back in the back seat, unless you use the angle adjuster. The only small problem with that is then the seat is very upright and tall and in my Accord, I couldn't see over the seat and it limited my visibility in the rearview.

I have a foonf and even though it's a bigger seat, the angle in the back allowed better visibility for my car.

My DH sits pretty far back and we had two RF Britax seats in our Civic and CRV for almost 2 years. The seat was almost touching the driver's seat so it was tight but possible.

@Somebunny: the combi cocorro is small. Some people complain that kids grow out of it by 3 or 3.5, but then you can pass the Britax down and get your older LO a high back booster or something?

We have a smallish SUV and a mid-sized car. LO is currently rear facing in a Britax Marathon. She'll be 2 in May and is creeping up on the 35lb weight limit for rear facing in the seat. I'd like to keep her rear facing for a while longer, but we're expecting another LO in September and can't see how we can fit 2 of our current car seat model in the back of our cars. So I'm trying to find convertible car seats that might not stick out as far when rear facing. I don't mind pushing the passenger seat up to give it room, but the driver seats need to stay where they are and DH needs the leg room.

Any suggestions for convertible seats that take up less space? A bigger base is fine, it just needs to not push into the front seats. Is that even possible?
