We were given several packs and didn't use hardly any of them. I think I would buy one 4-pack, maybe two. I did like using them as changing mats & burp cloths, and as a head support in the carseat when LO was an newborn. I also used them as part of our swaddle technique to secure DS's arms. If you do decide to get some, I would keep it to a minimum.

We hardly used ours... like @Mrsdaredevil: said.. "Too small to swaddle with and not warm enough to actually use as a blanket in the carseat or stroller." I'd say receiving blankets were our LEAST helpful baby item, actually. I'm not sure what to do with them now-- maybe Baby X will use them when he's older and can have blankets in his crib?

Instead, for a blanket, we used a SwaddleMe or several large blankets my grandma made that were good for a tight swaddle, and some thicker blankets for the car. Then we used 12 Gerber cloth diapers as burp cloths, to catch let down from the other side when necessary, and now we also use them to clean up after meal time. They're more absorbent than the receiving blankets or the things that are sold as "burp cloths", they can be bleached since they're white, and since they're smaller, they were easy to toss in the diaper bag without taking loads of space.

We definitely use them. Use to cover our changing pad and keep a few stashed in the diaper bag.

I'd probably get a few just to have. They have them pretty cheap at TJMaxx/Marshalls, and I'd definitely want some A&As.

@prettylizy: Oh! I do this, too! It catches all the dribbles and saves my shirts/tummy/pants. AND it catches the "instant puke" spit-ups when the let down is too much for him.

I also bring one when I go to a friend's house so he has something familiar to sit on. He usually chews on it/ lays on it.

Yes! I use the ALL THE TIME and they are the majority of my laundry and what I wash/use regularly--they are the easiest thing to cover my changing pad. We keep one in the car for spills, one in the man cave for puke, one in the living room for puke.... they are GREAT for puke. We also used them for the first several weeks to swaddle LO and he loved them.
And now I bunch them up and they are a toy. Greatest purchase ever. I bought 7 (we didn't have a shower, so we have 7).
I also use them as carseat blankets.
For reference my baby was 8lbs 2oz and a really fast grower from 0-3 months.

Like @ms mini: they are also great for open air accidents. A friend cut hers up after the newborn stage (her LO is not as much of a spitter as mine) and uses them in her cloth diapers because they are very absorbent.

We really like the ultimate receiving blankets. They were good to swaddle with when she was little and are a nice blanket for afterwards. We have these and some A&A blankets and use them all.

I have a million and never used them. Too small to swaddle with and not warm enough to actually use as a blanket in the carseat or stroller. we used a bunch of aiden and anais blankets to swaddle though. And warm, thicker blankets for cuddling, strolling, and rides in the car.
I could send you mine if you want some!

No, as long as you have a couple packs of A&A blankets, you don't need any. We actually were gifted most of the receiving blankets after he was born!

I didn't get any either, I ended up going and buying 8, I used them as burp clothes, and over the changing area of his pack and play. He liked to do the open-air pee, and spit up a lot, so those 8 were in constant use.

We used them a ton when she was a newborn. She needed some in her carseat to wedge her in there (our hospital required we have at least 4 to tuck her in as a brand new baby) and then I used them when I was nursing at the beginning to catch all the milk I dribbled everywhere, almost like a boob bib!! lol! They also worked like a bib for her and spit up catchers.

eta: We have about 8 total and didn't need any more than that.
