@ShootingStar: Thank you very much for your sound advice. I am definitely going to do all I can to treat myself before things get worse.

My RE wasn't going to originally put me on Metformin until I asked if I could/should be on it. She was like "Oh yeah, you probably are insulin-resistant looking at the numbers. Okay." Her purpose was to treat the immediate problem - get me to ovulate. And in her mind the other drugs (clomid, femara, etc) were for that purpose.

But again, I SERIOUSLY stress getting any blood sugar issues under control now. See a nutritionist, see an endocrinologist, whoever can help you. I really wish I had taken the time while TTC-ing to address that problem, and maybe I wouldn't have ended up with GD. And with GD, there's no pre-GD. You either pass or fail, so if your numbers are slightly elevated since you're pre-diabetic, they will treat you as already diabetic.

@pui: yea I would definitely want to try to address it if still no success before moving at an IUI.

@LindsayInNY: Yeah I'm planning on talking to my GP for a second opinion... my concern is my RE is really only worried about getting me pregnant and isn't as concerned about my overall health as my GP will be. My GP was originally going to put me on Metformin when he thought I had PCOS 5 months ago.

@T.H.O.U.: I don't think he ever planned on putting me on Metformin. The plan is if I am not KU in 3 cycles using the above treatment, we'd start IUIs.

@pui: Weird. Could you ask your GP about both the cholesterol and the insulin levels? Mention that you're concerned?

@pui: I guess the other question is how long does your RE want you to try on that set of medications before looking at other options? I see the point in less medications the better, so maybe trying one month with just the stuff you have planned and then see if he would add the metformin.

@LindsayInNY: He had them highlighted but he didn't seem concerned. He did say that my cholesterol was a little high and that I should see my GP about it, so I made an appointment for November 18th.

I am also surprised you weren't put on it.
Studies show metformin helps maintain a pregnancy for PCOS people. I got pregnant on metformin and was told it was important to stay on it to help prevent a loss. (Not sure how my #'s looked compared to yours!)

I conceived on metformin and acupuncture.

I do recommend if you take it, to ask for the extended release. The regular has more tummy effects for me.

Your fasting blood sugar doesn't look great, you seem to be in the pre-diabetic range. I would ask to be put on metformin, purely because of that. I have PCOS, am insulin resistant, and was pre-diabetic until pregnancy (now have GD).

Metformin never helped me ovulate, but it did a great job with helping my blood sugar, and when you get pregnant you're not going to want be diagnosed with GD tight away, like I was. I stopped taking it, thinking it hadn't been found anything, and I was ver wrong.

I was just diagnosed with PCOS on Tuesday. My blood work, AMH and ultrasound all confirm that diagnosis. I do not ovulate/have cycles on my own, but the two times I took Clomid (50mg) I ovulated.

My treatment plan for my first monitored cycle starting the end of November is:
- Provera for 10 days to induce my period.
- 100mg Clomid CD3-7.
- Ovidrel trigger
- Crinone for 12 days.

What surprised me is that my doctor did not recommend Metformin to me. I asked him about it and he said that he'd rather not put me on more medication than I need and since I've had past success with Clomid I should be fine.

I did some reading on my own time and I saw that some were saying Metformin is not necessary if you are not insulin resistant. I asked my RE to fax my blood results to me.

Well this is what it says:

Insulin Fasting: 105.0
Insulin 120 Minutes: 825.0

The target is listed as 13-161... so in my unprofessional opinion it looks like I am Insulin Resistant!

So what do you bees think? Should I consider starting Metformin? Or should I just go with my RE's recommendations?
