@ladyfingers: that's the worst...when you try and try and try to fix it...and it doesn't work.

@MediaNaranja: it was HORRIBLE. He told me what he was making and I distinctly remember telling him that it would be vile. At least I was right...

@prettylizy: that's a bummer.

I made a red wine braised slow cooker beef thing, DH and I were really excited about it, it smelled so good during the prep phase, by the time we got to it, it was bone dry and awful.

I had this recipe for a Portuguese stew, it sounded really good, but it was AWFUL. It was a bunch of stuff thrown in a pot and it just tasted like nothing. Like plain carrots in water. I kept adding salt and seasonings and the more stuff I added, the more bland it got. Our dog didn't even seem interested in it. It was like anti-food. That's our Kahlua Deer -- anytime we make anything so-so, it's, "At least it's not the Portuguese stew."

@FutureMrsMcK: i bet you could - that's more like it!

@HeatherlovesKenny: @Sweet T: have you seen the Pinterest fail blog? It's awesome. And some Pinterest recipes are ridiculously disgusting. They just look pretty.

@Foodnerd81: ugh, and then you had to clean out the crock pot. Bet that was adding insult to injury.

I made this recipe for pan roasted chicken with lemon garlic green beans and potatoes. I found it on pinterest and it looked delicious. (http://pinterest.com/pin/20055160810718390/) It was horrible!! We ended up throwing most of it away.

I also tried making tomato soup mac & cheese last night. (http://pinterest.com/pin/167336942375706032/) It wasn't terrible but it wasn't what I expected either. It didn't look anything like the picture and was way too creamy. I'd be willing to retry it with some changes though.

I've only had to just throw something out once. I made barbecue chicken in the slow cooker, but I didn't have enough to fill the pot up and the sauce was sort of sugary to begin with, so the entire thing just totally burned. I thought maybe the part in the middle would at least be OK but it was disgusting. It's the one and only time I just tossed the entire thing and ordered pizza (after a few beers on the roof deck to make me feel better).

I just made cookies for DS's preschool pumpkin carving night. GROSS. I found it on Pinterest: cool whip, cake mix and an egg. The cookies just tasted like raw cake batter -.-

@dagret: Yeah...I took one bite of the "grits pie" and promptly spit it out. My boyfriend at the time ate a whole slice, bless his heart. He actually named it "Auntie Sarah's Grits Pie". I wonder if I could make it now...polenta, bacon, a nice sharp cheddar...

@Mrsbells: that's awesome. If it's semi-gross I can pull off changing it into something good, but if it's really gross I can't figure out anything good about it & chuck it.

@FutureMrsMcK: grits pie sounds like it was chock full o'chemicals. And you could have probably pulled off the frittata. I'm blaming that one on the oven.

@yoursilverlining: I think everyone makes the salt/sugar mistake at least once...Of course, that's how we knew DH's grandma was starting to lose it...everything (I mean, EVERYTHING) was either way too sugary or way too salty.

@blackbird: I've had the same problem with recipes containing lime so now I avoid cooking with it. Bummer.

Oh my, that does sound gross! I made a "summer pot roast" a few months back...it had sweet potatoes and limes and lemons in it and I thought, "oh this will be citrusy" but what happened is that they over-saturated the onions and parts of the meat, and instead of being light and summery, they were so tart and bitter, we ended up throwing out most of it. It was disgusting.

Omg kahlua deer?!?!

I made an apple pie once that was so nasty; I don't know what happened but I must have subbed the sugar for salt because all it tastes like was SALT. you couldn't taste apple or anything. My poor husband took like 3 bites and pretended to like it, then I took a bite and of course was embarassed and threw the whole thing away. We still laugh about my "salt pie" baking skills!

I've also had trouble with multiple Martha Stewart recipes; and I'm a good cook (now!) so I usually avoid her recipes now even tho I see lots of tasty looking ones :/

When I was 19: "Grits Pie" (not my name)--cornmeal, stock, bacon bits and velveeta cheese baked in a pie dish. Tasted like awful.

When I was 21 I served a chicken in a wine sauce dish--the chicken was still raw inside.

A few years ago I tried making a potato frittata on the stove using leftover mashed potatoes, but had way too many potatoes to eggs, and the eggs wouldn't cook. I was going to bake it, but as I was heating the oven remembered that the weekend before DH's stupid BM had tried to make bacon-wrapped asparagus...on a flat cookie sheet. I remembered the massive amount of bacon grease that hadn't yet been cleaned off the floor of our over after smoke started pouring out of it.

We ended up ordering a pizza.

Usually if something doesnt turn out the way i wanted it to, I am able to make it into something else. Its never inedible and actually I end up discovering new recipes that way.
DH on the other hand has made a few inedible meals and its funny because this one time it was so terrible and he didnt want to admit it, so he said he liked it at first and even "saved' it in the fridge. The next day I cooked a meal and then asked if he would rather eat his leftovers and he burst out laughing and said "no way"

So what are your worst recipe fails?

I made a Martha Stewart cider braised short ribs meal the other week that was TERRIBLE. It made me so mad b/c I hate to waste food, and short ribs and cider are fricking expensive. Seriously, cider is like $7/gallon this year!!!

And my husband made an absolutely inedible meal years ago that set our low bar for food - it was KAHLUA DEER. As in, deer made with KAHLUA liquor in it. barf. When something's bad, but not inedible, we always say, it's no Kahlua deer.

Have you made inedible meals (on purpose or accidentally?) any success in salvaging an inedible meal?
