@MrsRcCar: I've never heard of wow butter! Will have to look into it.

@erinpye: we do add lots of spices, but she really seems more concerned about the texture of the food than the taste. But I'm def going to try adding avocado to banana - thanks!

@Boheme: ha! I've never had coconut oil before, and I certainly wouldn't have thought of giving it straight! That's pretty funny that he likes it so much, going to have to give it a shot!

When my LO needed to catch up in weight, our ped had us give him a straight tbsp of coconut oil every day. He loves the taste of it, and still points to the jar asking for it!
I also roast his veggies in it. Roasted sweet potatoes in coconut oil are his fav!

I didn't read all the replies, so forgive any repeat suggestions, but we had to fatten up DD1's food and added coconut oil to things, unsalted butter, whole milk yogurt, cheese, nut butters, and try mashing a banana with an avocado- both my babies didn't love avocado plain, but did eat it mashed with banana. You can also add spices to baby food to add to its appeal (just no salt, sugar, or honey obviously). I added cinnamon to things with apple/ oatmeal/ pumpkin, and a little garlic to peas, which made a big difference. Baby food doesn't have to be bland!

@Pirouette: We have this problem with N too. We started introducing wow butter to his diet as well as sun butter. They have helped so much. He also likes to have his veggies with vegan butter (he is dairy free).

@cmomma17: yum, totally trying that! we do try to dip her fruit in yogurt, but it's a little messy since she likes to feed herself. but freezing it...great idea!

@Meltini: pasta is so easy too - another plus :)

@oliviaoblivia: um...i guess not? i thought they were a big no no up to like 2 years old. but there's no specific reason she can't have them - there are no nut allergies in our family. i just thought nuts and shellfish were the ones to hold off on (and honey for other reasons). if that's not really true, that would open up a ton of other options, especially in smoothies (yum!)

@Mrs Green Grass: seeds are a great idea! and mmm...pesto!!

@Greentea: ooh interesting! i love all these creative ideas. totally adding olive oil to her smoothie tomorrow!

@LovelyPlum: i thought about sausage but was a little worried about too much sodium. I think i'm gonna stop worrying about that and just give her lots of water :) and yea i know! i'm trying not to get too optimistic in case there's a relapse, but seriously YAY!!!

@JerricaBenton: you are right, we need to work on caloric snacks. she LOVES fruit and veggies, so i need to work on mixing in calories with them!

@lamariniere: we haven't intro'd gluten yet, but we've been giving her quinoa pasta, which is also high in protein! only problem is it gets hard if it sits, and i always made it in advance, and she didn't want it. but i think i'm gonna try the small batch idea rather than making it ahead and putting it in the fridge and hopefully that will help.

loving all these great ideas!

Lots of good ideas here. One thing I have just discovered for DD is Kamut pasta. I buy spirals and cook a small batch and let DD eat with her hands. It has something like 10 grams of protein per serving! Clearly, babies aren't going to eat an adult sized portion in one sitting, but maybe it could be a bit more healthful than regular pasta. You could always add a bit of olive oil for extra good fats.

LO always loved to drink so we did a lot of smoothies, but as far as food, I cook her food in butter, olive oil, or coconut oil. Add coconut oil to oatmeal with a bit of cream. She loves toast with butter or bagels with cream cheese. Pasta with butter, garlic and cheese is a favorite. Sometimes I give her tortellini with cheese too. We try to make sure snacks are caloric, not just fruit and veggies, like avocados in wheat germ, apple and peanut butter, pasta with black olives, Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese. Just keep offering.

I know you said no dairy, but we add whole milk powder to whole milk to increase the calories. Also butter on everything. Flax seeds, chia seeds, or even cereals can be added to many foods to increase calories.

Just remember that fats are healthy, especially for growing kids, so add them to all of the healthy stuff.

@Anagram: thank you! that was enlightening! you're absolutely right i need to turn "healthy" on its head. at least for the moment, LO seems to have outgrown the MSPI (though we'll be testing her poops periodically since we have to put her on WCM). I've been blindly giving her a lot of chicken breast though, and we need to change that up. I feel like i really need to change my perception, just like you said. Thanks!!

@Pirouette: I'm not a RD, but my LO is MSPI and I researched a lot about foods for toddlers as she started eating more, since she wouldn't be having cow's milk or breast milk (I stopped pumping when she was 13 months), and those are both good sources of proteins/fats/calories.

I think first, you have to kind of throw out the notions of what a lot of adults have of "healthy eating"--because healthy eating for an adult is so different from healthy eating for a toddler/child. Like, as an adult I try to avoid a lot of butter or fats--but for toddlers, it is absolutely essential. I would never drench vegetables in butter for myself, but I do for my LO (well, in her case, not butter...but I use a LOT of olive oil and earth balance).

Also, I didn't realize before that LOs should always be getting the fattiest cuts of meats. I used to only buy boneless skinless chicken breasts, for example....until a nutritionist at a toddler cooking class I attended said LOs do not need to be eating white meat very often. And now I buy a lot of chicken on the bone (thighs and legs) and give LO only dark meat.

Same for red meat---I give her the fattiest stuff--brisket, roasts, etc. No "extra lean" cuts of anything.

I think my LO eats very healthfully, just because she can't eat any dairy and therefore, she doesn't eat a lot of carbs because they have dairy or soy unless I home make them, and I don't have the time. She eats mostly proteins, vegetables, and fruits. But her weight gain has been really good as we've transitioned into foods from breast milk, and I think it's because of the above--liberal use of butter/olive oil in cooking, fatty cuts of meats, lots of eggs.

Hope that helps!

@Pirouette: I've actually never made avocado pasta myself, but I have it pinned to try! :silly: I'm guessing leftovers wouldn't work, but you could always just puree up 1/2 an avocado and make like a single-serving at a time for her.

Don't be afraid to experiment with hummus - there are so many flavors out there. My LO likes regular hummus, but LOVES the extra garlic one and the caramelized onion one. Good luck!

ETA: one other thought I had - what about freezing full fat yogurt to make frozen yogurt for her? You could even probably add some protein powder, or do that with something like pediasure.

@oliviaoblivia: yes, she likes yogurt, as long as it's mixed with some sort of fruit (especially banana). we've been adding it to smoothies and she'll take a bit of it. I love the idea of adding coconut oil to mashed banana! i've never heard of that, but she's a banana fiend! (coconut's ok for a 10 month old, right? it's not a nut i dont think?)

@Pirouette: does she eat yogurt? DD loves yogurt smoothies. I'll add frozen blueberries to 10%mf yogurt and some WCM and she drinks a ton.
As far as oils, olive is great you could use some coconut for a different flavor. I've also heard of people adding coconut oil to mashed banana.
