It obviously isn't a light read, but it has really sucked me in. It includes a ton of detail about the buildings and how they really weren't up to code and there was no plan for how to get all of the people out of the buildings. It is a WWII novel that I really enjoyed. Also, I'm currently reading Power of One, which is WWII but in S Africa so a different perspective. Finally, since you mentioned WWII and mysteries, I'd also recommend The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo. It's a Norwegian police procedural that involves a WWII backstory. I'm obsessed with Scandinavian police procedurals though, don't know if it'll be your thing.
