We have two different ones because of our staircase and banister. We have the summer infant one. My DH had to rig it though. It didn't expand wide enough so he took a 2X4 piece of wood and bungecorded it to the main pole on the banister. That made it to where the gate would span the opening. On the opening at the top of the stairs it is banister on both sides. We felt it wasn't secure enough and again was wider than the gate. So we bought a free standing dog gate. And moved it to span across the opening to the landing. I actually like this because I'm not trying to open the gate on the very top step. I have a few feet of landing to step up on before having to manage the gate.

We have this Munchkin one: http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Safe-Step-Gate-TripGuard/dp/B009UPUOVG
It was really important to us that the bottom part be low-profile to avoid a tripping hazard (our laundry room is in the basement and I was having vision of me and a full load of clothes pitching down the stairs...). I'm not sure how it could be bannister-mounted, though, since we have just enough wall at the top of the stairs that we could wall-mount it on both sides. There may be an extra kit available, I'm not sure.

We have this one at the top and like it, but it's wall mounted, not banister.

http://amzn.com/B0030IICWC

And we have this one at the bottom, it is mounted between banisters. We had to attach small boards on the inside of the banisters to make it work. We just nailed them in with small finishing nails so they can be removed when we are done. They aren't really that noticeable.

We have this one at the top:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VNKLI4

I like it. Easy to install (had to use a drill into the wall for one side, but no drilling into the banister side). It works well and the whole thing opens up easily. Plus you can take the gate off completely if you need to.

It feels like there are a million choices but no obvious winner. We need a gate for the stairs, ideally under $75 including all of the pieces to mount it (I think we need spacers and a banister kit either included or available.) I worry about the ones that swing open dinging the paint but maybe that's not an issue for some reason?

So what gate so you have and love?
