We have this one - made by Crock pot. I think it works great

http://www.crock-pot.com/product.aspx?pid=371

I always cook with a lot of liquid, so i've never had an issue with it burning or charing the meat. I can remove the "pot" and put it in the dishwasher and it comes with a strap if i need to travel with the dish i've made. Love the timer and i'm actually making pulled chicken in it today

I have a simple 6 qt Hamilton one that does the job, but nothing fancy. If I were to get another one, I'd definitely spring for one that's programmable and automatically switches to warm after cooking time elapses.

The one thing I do like about my current slow cooker is that the lid is hinged to the pot so I don't have to find a place to put it when I "take off the lid". I just lift and it stays there.

I've had mine for 5 years now- a Hamilton one I believe. Definately get a programmable one! I'm actually using it for our dinner tonight- chicken curry...yum.

I've been using this one for about a year and haven't had issues. (It's also the only one I've had so I have no basis for comparison) I really like this cause of the difference size bowls if I don't have a lot to make. I also never travel with it, so the latches wasn't something I was looking for.

@Thehistoryofus: Oh, so that's what those latches are for! I found them baffling until you explained it.

A few things I looked for:

1. Right size for your family.
2. I would love a programmable one
3. Lid latches shut (great for traveling and for keeping in moisture
4. Handles fold down for storage.

Please help - I want to use a slow cooker again! Years ago we went through one or two and I remember one of them having issues with being too hot and it actually melted off the handle. We eat a lot of stew-y dishes that require tending to a large pot, so I want to give this another try! Do you know of a slow cooker that works really well and has a larger capacity?
