We have a mish mash as well. For an inexpensive set I like the kid kraft better than ikea because some of the taller engines don't fit under the ikea bridge. :/ I'm currently scouting Craigslist for some Thomas trains since those are the favorites around here.

We have quite the mishmash, the tracks are not as important as the engines, IMO.

So, for tracks, I purchased a set from Amazon, it's a generic set and has a lot of different pieces. You'll need to get add ons, no matter what you purchase, because the basic set is basically curved and straight pieces and you will need some connectors and such. The sets are made in a way so that you can't buy what you need all in one shot, very sneaky, right?

I would also get a roundhouse, it's a great piece for storage of engines and "center" of the set. Bridges and tunnel add ons are also great, my son loves the tunnel set we got for him.

How about this one? It seems pretty well likes based on its 4.5 review.

The Brio ones are the best. We have a huge off-brand set (bought in France) that is compatible with Brio. The quality isn't quite as nice, but it was a lot cheaper for all the things that came with it. As for the ikea ones (we also have one set), they are ok, but you don't get as many options with bridges and accessories.

P.P.S. We had only gotten the Ikea ones two days ago so just now I tried to connect the ikea tracks to the brio tracks and they don't connect. :( But the trains will work on any track - just not the tracks for connecting.

We got DS a brio set for his birthday. We just got him a simple figure 8 set and my parents got him the farm set to add onto it. It's really nice quality and people can gift him more sets.

@lisa1783: Yay! This is great news :) He is only 20 months, but he is OBSESSED with anything with wheels. I think he will really like them :) Plain is probably good for now, and we can always get more trains later.

@Mrs. Lion: they are not as nice as the more pricey sets. the trains are pretty simple but I think it's a great way to start off. You can always add to it. The only thing I have notice with ikea and brio is that Thomas and larger trains don't fit in the tunnels. So when you mix and add in the tunnels can cause problems but our trains learned how to jump over tunnels. That seemed to work. I think imaginarium is the brand at target. Those are pretty good too and had some bigger sets for reasonable prices.

Also wanted to add that I think Brio makes really awesome train cars. Most of them come with multiple pieces that are interchangeable with the other sets they produce.

@Mrs. Lion: The ikea one is definitely a great value for the price. We originally only had brio tracks and trains but we just picked up the ikea figure 8 set and the bridge set and for $20 combined, it's great! The tracks are compatible with all our trains. My only complaint might be the train cars themselves are pretty plain but my son didn't mind at all (2.5 years). He spent over an hour playing with them today.

I grew up with a brio train set. My parents still have it for kids that come over (and now LO) and I think they have one broken piece. Definitely good quality!

@Mrs. Train: Is the Ikea one ok quality? C still throws his stuff all over the place, but we don't have it in the budget to invest in a Thomas set and were going to get him a starter Ikea set for Christmas. Worth it? I think the set is only $10 new.

We have the Thomas wooden railways. It is really nice and is really durable. I haven't found a wooden railway that doesn't fit with it, brio, Ikea, chuggington. It was by far one of our best toy investments. My kids have been playing with it for years

We are looking for ideas to put onto our wish list for Christmas, and I am thinking a wooden train set would be great (we don't have a train table and aren't in the market for one at this point) are there any cool train sets out there?
