I have an Asus and really like it. It was a little less than $300. It's basic but I don't really have anything else that I would want it to be able to do.

Keep an eye on the Tech Bargains website. DH is a computer guy and that's where he always finds laptops for us or other people. Our current one is an asus. Storage is not a problem and I think it was pretty cheap.

We've had 2 Toshiba Satellites now and they do the job. We bought mine for $400 4 years ago and it's chugging along.... Slowly, but still going.

@Mrs. Turtle: @MediaNaranja: I was thinking of doing something refurbished, potentially a refurbished MacBook, but it does make me nervous, not sure why.

@IRunForFun: Yeah, I used mine primarily for email, Facebook and I used Google docs for a few things. Now that I'm working from home, blogging, running a business I'm very happy with my refurbished dell laptop. Its not super fancy or fast but it does the job.

@Mrs. Turtle: Good points! I will stay away from a Chromebook then.

@IRunForFun: I liked my chromebook a lot until the battery died. I had trouble getting Samsung to do anything about it which was annoying. I think, though, that working from home and taking classes, you'd want some storage on a hard drive. On the chromebook you're limited to online apps and online storage for everything. Plus if your internet goes out, you're left with a pretty useless device.

I bought a refurbished HP model on Groupon a year or so ago, and it works great! I was a little wary buying a refurbished model, but it has been heavily used daily for the past 18 months and has given me zero issues. It is a traditional laptop, not a chromebook/netbook, so I am able to download software. I think it was around $350 or so, but did not come w/ Microsoft office, which added another $100.

@HabesBabe: Hmmm I hadn't thought about not being able to download software on the Chromebook. Bummer!

I love my Chromebook! It sounds ALMOST perfect for your needs, but if you need to download special software for scheduling (instead of a web-based version), you're kinda screwed. But the battery life is amazing, it starts up super quick (like... in seconds. Lightning quick!), and that's mostly because there's nothing really ON the Chromebook. At least that's how I understand it to be.

Starting after the new year I'll be working from home, mainly doing writing, but also using some specific software programs for scheduling appointments, as well as using Google calendar, etc.

I'm also in school part-time doing hybrid courses, so some of the content is online.

I need a new laptop. We have two right now, one is a Macbook, which is 6 years old and still functional, but has no battery life (has to stay plugged in) and overheats sometimes. The other is a Lenovo ThinkPad, 5 years old and also mainly functional, but the screen is glitchy and damaged, plus DH uses it most of the time.

I don't need any fancy bells and whistles, just something that's simple, intuitive, and gets the job done. It also needs to be affordable, which is kind of why I'm leaning away from another MacBook.

Anyone have a Chromebook that can tell me about it? Or another recommendation?

Thanks!
