@PawPrints: thanks for your shining review of your carpet cleaner! ☺ I guess I'm not strictly looking for a steamer, but do need a thorough carpet cleaner. I'm glad you've gotten a lot of good use out of your cleaner.
The thing that keeps me from just going for it, is that (despite lots of great reviews) plenty of people are also giving poor reviews of several units I'm looking at saying they leak or break after just a few uses! I'll probably go with a brick & mortar store & a protection plan, which I don't usually bother with for other purchases. :bummed:

Ours is a shampooer, not a steamer, and this bad boy is AMAZING.

https://www.amazon.com/Hoover-MaxExtract-Carpet-Cleaner-Garnet-F7411900/dp/B0013YOMME/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1301343200&sr=8-3

We've had it for six years and it has turned some ungodly pet-created messes into non-issues on our carpet over the years. It pays for itself over and over again, and we've loaned it out to a ton of people too since everyone always wants to use it. We're about to move out of our home and turn it into a rental unit, and there's no need to pay for professional carpet cleaning since we can DIY. So, super worth the price.

@GoGoSnoGirl: I totally know what you mean about them looking dirty. However, the one that I got looks pretty dirty too but it works really well. If the price is right, I say go for it!!! :)

@Mommy Finger: yeah, I started out looking for used ones, but the ones available in our area right now are either not that much less than new, or look dirty even in the pic. :bummed:
@bubblegum: @snowjewelz: @Mrs. Pickle: thanks ladies for your recommendations for Bissell. I'm only looking at those & Hoovers at the moment, but there are so many even within each brand I get overwhelmed! Lol! I'm going to just bite the bullet this week, though, & keep my fingers crossed a mid-level one will perform & hold up fairly well.

@GoGoSnoGirl: I'm not sure why it went on sale. We looked at it one day and decided it was too much and then a couple days later the price dropped and we bought it immediately. Maybe it will happen again?? I do think Bissel is a great brand so I think a smaller one would work really well too.

We have a Bissell too... Tho it's really for spot cleaning pet messes, I really like it! I would def go for a Bissell for other carpet cleaning needs.

This might not be the most helpful response but my mom just gave me a really old Hoover that was my aunts and it still runs really well. We used it with just water the first time and the amount of dirt it picked up was disgusting and I thought it dried pretty quickly. All this to say, I would try to see if you could buy a used one.

I have this and it's amazing!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00450U6CS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1489897796&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bissel+mean+green&dpPl=1&dpID=31S11VmsvCL&ref=plSrch

I did buy it on Amazon for around $200 a couple months ago. It just randomly went on sale. My carpet is original to my house, so it's 32 years old! It was like brand new after I steamed it. We have dogs, plus there were some stains when we moved it. I have no idea how old the stains were, but they came up with no effort.

We don't have a ton of carpet--just 4 bedrooms & 2 area rugs, but want to be able to steam clean our carpets, especially after a recent vomit situation in LO's room. The last time I rented one, but had to go to 2 different places to get one that was clean enough to put on our bedroom carpet  & find one that wasn't broken. We can't afford the top of the line ones, but I could entertain spending up to $200 for one that is really worth it. I'd prefer staying under $150 for the relatively gentle use we'd put one through and have seen several Bissell or Hoover brand steam cleaners that *look* good--I just wonder how they actually do in cleaning & pulling up as much water as possible since it's still wet & cold here and we can't open up the house to speed drying. We won't need the upholstery or stair tools, though I suppose my car seats could use a cleaning. Anyway, I'm hoping some bees have some well tested favorites.
