We live in rural Colorado and it's always great in sketchy road conditions and fits quite a bit of cargo. We test drove the Forester, the Honda CR-V, and the Mazda CX-5 as well. I love the way the Outback drives (due to the CVT transmission) and it just felt like a step above the other models we were considering. The amount of cargo space is great. I just sold mine and was SO sad! We are expecting a 3rd and it was like driving a clown car. I can't say enough good things about it! Drives great in snow and tons of trunk space, great gas mileage. The only drawback is if you plan on having 3 I would definitely size up. The most important features I care about is AWD and decent gas mileage (oh and I'd love to have a sun roof again).
