Also, we were able to install it so that there is a landing between the top stair and the gate, which feels safer for day-to-day use. It's strapped to the banister on one side, and bolted into the wall on the other. We went with the Munchkin Loft Aluminum ones, and I love them! I specifically didn't want the "trip bar" (what we call it) that everyone always trips over if they aren't paying attention! Even though I measured it’s just a tiny bit too short for our stair opening, and even though we fixed that by adding an extra piece on one side, it’s difficult to open and really tricky to close- so guests almost always do it incorrectly. I wan't comfortable with doing that. I put it back a bit so that people could get up the stairs and take quite a few steps before having to deal with the gate.
