Lo drinks gerber good start gentle, which I would recommend because it is more broken down. The generic is parent's choice tender but I think it smells nasty. (not that any formula really smells good) However it is milk based.

we had issues while in the US on holiday finding a formula that my previously EBF 10 month old would drink. the one that finally worked was the dark blue RTD similac. for our flight yesterday we used the little pre packaged 4oz similac powder ones @LaineysMom: mentioned. works a treat :)

The Costco store brand didn't work for us - it gets very foamy and resulted in a lot of spit-up and unhappiness. But we use the Target store brand now and have had no problems.

@birdofafeather: my DD is exclusively fed breastmilk and I have no intention of ever supplementing. That being said, I bought the little "to go" packs of Similac advanced to put in her diaper bag in the off chance that I forgot to give someone expressed milk or did not give enough. I opened one pack (makes 4 oz) and gave it to DD to make sure she didn't have a bad reaction to it, because if she did I wanted it to be with me. If anything ever happens everyone who takes her knows about the type of formula that she will take.. Crossing my fingers that her tastes haven't changed.

Similac makes a new formula specifically for supplementation....it's listed as an "easy" transition to formula.

that being said, we used the blue similac (advance) for awhile before switching to the "nutritionally similar" sam's club version.

@birdofafeather: We had Earth's Best in a can for emergencies, I opened it (but never used it) and found out we had to throw it away a month after opening. Boo. So no feedback on how it actually worked but I did research back then and went with that (off Amazon).

@mrsmate: that totally makes sense to me, but only problem with it is that i'm not interested in supplementing regularly, but just in an emergency. so i don't necessarily want to give it to her unless we have no other option! she seems to be a pretty easy going baby with all other things (takes a cold bottle from anyone, naps on the go, etc) so i don't anticipate it being an issue. but just trying to weed through all the options from moms who have been there!

Formula is like anything else with babies...a brand that works for one may not agree with another. You can even have different results with the same brand, powder vs ready to feed. You just don't know till you try. Nutritionally they're all about the same, so I recommend trying generics first, bc it's expensive. And introduce it before you really need it bc you don't know how your LO will take it. Good luck!

We use Similac Advanced. I only use it if I don't have enough breast milk to supplement, but DS seems to like it.

We had a issue last week that we made it 30 minutes into our 2 hour drive to my parents when we realized that we forgot expressed milk for R for an entire 36 hours away from me! We were close enough that I just turned around and went back for it (with a lot of frustration on my part!). Had we been further away, we probably would have just picked up some formula when we got there. She's been EBF since she was born (5.5 months old), so while I would have been annoyed, I wouldn't have been devastated that I had to buy her formula because girl has got to eat!

That being said, my mom suggested that we store some backup formula at her house since if that happens again, it probably would be on the way to her place when I have a wedding that I'm shooting and thus away from R.

Do you have any suggestions on a good backup for a EBF baby at 5.5 months? I'm totally in the dark about options, if she needs something for her age, ones to avoid because it tastes bad, vitamins that should be in it, etc. If it matters, we try to eat organic/local when we can and if we can find something that is organic and people recommend, that would be great!

I had samples, but they've expired. :/

ETA: i have a mild lactose intolerance, so i try to stay away from dairy, but i've noticed no reactions from her when i do have dairy, if that makes a difference?
