I had a used Honda Civic for seven years and man, that car was amazing!! I never had to put a dime towards it other than the usual yearly maintenance (oil change, new tires, etc) and it had made me a Honda customer for life. Highly recommend!

Love my Toyota Corolla! You could probably get one for less than your budgeted amount. Or a Camry if you want something bigger, but I love the gas mileage of the smaller car.

I really like my Hyundai Elantra. It gets good gas mileage and has been really reliable. I have a 2009 with about 100,000 miles. I've only needed new tires and brakes. My mom has a Sonata and really likes it too if you need something slightly larger.

We purchased a Nissan Versa last year. It's a 2011 and we paid right around $15k for it with 34,000 miles on it. All we've done in the year we've had it is oil changes and replace one tire when I ran over a bottle. We bought the hatchback, and my mother who is tall is very comfortable in this car.

Friends of ours have a Honda fit and love it. It was super affordable and has great gas mileage for them. Theirs is a foor door and from what I understand it has good trunk space too!

@littlek: We had a Forrester and liked it but "upgraded" to a Ford Edge recently and I can't say enough good things about the edge, but it's more like 30K.

Have you considered a lease? We own our Jetta and our second car is always a lease - don't have to worry about wear and tear and maintenance. You can do a 3 year / 30K mile lease.

@littlek: My FIL works for Ford so husband's entire family drives Fords - brother, sister and grandma all drive a Focus, parents have a Flex. My sister has a Focus too! We just replaced our Escape (due to Sandy) with a Jeep, just to get something different.

@LindsayInNYC: Funny enough, I was just looking at the Ford Fusion Hybrid.. I think I will recommend DH look at it.

@winniebee: I've never owned a Subaru, is that a good brand? I love my BMW, but that's too pricey for what is pretty much going to be a commuter car.

@mediagirl: My parents had a Mazda 323 that lasted forever.. I'll have to tell DH to look at Mazda as well..

@Leialou: I concur. I love my Mazda3, as well. It's 4 door, cost $18k new and has run for 119k miles so far with no major problems. I've gotten oil changes and new tires. I think I'll finally need new brakes here in a few thousand miles or so...

I'm a commuter, as well. I drive 30 miles one way to work. This little car can go. It can also haul a lot of stuff. I have the hatchback and it's amazing how much you can fit in it!!

I love my Mazda 3. It's got 4 doors and the trunk is roomy. The backseat doesn't feel small either. I go 400 miles on a tank of gas. I'm not sure how much it is new, I bought mine when it was 2 years old for 12k.

DH's car is fully paid off but the past few years we have been shelling out $2k a year on maintenace. The value of the car is now around $6k and to pass inspection it needs about another $2k of work. So, DH is considering getting a new car. He doesn't need anything fancy, it will be a commuter car. The main requirements are 4 doors and we'd like to spend around $20 - $25k. Recommendations??
