I can't say I have personal experience with Barbie OR my suggestion but maybe look into Fancy Nancy? Seems like it might work.

@hitchhiker: Agree with this! Watch a few episodes of Barbie, particularly “Team Walters” or “Life in the Dreamhouse”. Some of the longer feature films like mermaid/ Princess etc. are kind of yuck, but the shorter episodes really are not bad. My girls switched off a sports- themed episode at the end the other day and built their own basketball hope, characters are entrepreneurs, etc.

Other shows I can think of that I’ve seen fashion episodes on are LEGO Friends and Lala Loopsy, Which are definitely worse than the current Barbie show for what you want to avoid, in my opinion.

I bet she’d like one of the Disney shows –VicTORIus or Liv and Maddie, or iCarly, but those are all kind of silly/vapid.

ETA: I’m talking about NetFlix - not sure what’s on the kindle, but will follow along because my girls would love a dress-up game.

Have you watched the show? It definitely has it's problems, but I don't think it's quite as anti-feminist as you are portraying. Their mom is a computer programmer, there is a lot of focus on handling relationships. I think it's more problematic on the consumerism front than the feminism front. It's not my favorite show, but it's definitely in the mix at our house with Molly of Denali, Pinkalicious, Arthur, Odd Squad, On Pointe, and others.

My kids get lots of messaging about both feminism and consumerism directly from me and in other media, so I don't mind if they have some less-mindful fun (god knows I need that in my life too!).

My 6 yo DD has a kindle fire and she discovered a bunch of Barbie games and shows that I loathe because of the distorted view of women Barbie represents. We talked about it and she said she just really likes the fashion aspect--dressing up a model and picking outfits, accessories, etc. That part I'm happy to encourage! So my question is do any of your kids watch fashion-centered shows or play games/apps that are less "loathe-inducing" from this feminist mama?
