@Mrs. Deer: we found ours at Target, so I was able to try them on him to get a fit I was happy with. This one is zippered a body suit that covers legs and arms, I wanted something very secure that wouldn't just slip off (at least a crotch strap is a must with these slippery little kiddos).

Ultimately, at 18 months someone had him by the hand the entire time because he just wasn't steady enough at that point (started walking on his own at 15 mos). He also liked to do the "deadman float" diving head first into the water, he is super comfortable in the water since he has been in swim lessons since he was 2 months old, but the ocean is a different beast.

we have a costco vest, but honestly, she doesn't get to the point of going into the water like that! and you're in my hood!

The puddle jumpers aren't bad but even right at 30 lbs it put my daughters face very close to the water when she was floating. It fits her much better this year that she's closer to 35 lbs.

I would really recommend getting some sort of life vest or suit. Floaties that just go on the arms aren't great for the beach. If you are alone at the beach, one second checking your phone or putting the lid on the sunscreen and she could be out to the water!

@Sparkler: @MamaG: yeah I really want to get that one! LD is just a skinny-minnie I know it won't fit.

@lemondrop: part of me is wondering if we'd even use it too, she's just so crazy around water and tries to submerge herself. Maybe we'll hang in the sand :/

Another vote for the puddle jumper. My LO has been wearing one since 25lbs and it works great!

I bought a floatation suit for my son for an 18 month beach trip, but we never ended up using it. We really never went in beyond knee deep on myself and he was happy to splash around in the tide pools. Sunscreen, a big floppy hat that tied on was a must have, along with a rash guard to help prevent sunburn.

We use a Stearns Puddle Jumper, the recommended weight starts at 30 pounds, unfortunately. We started using this for LO when she was about 20 months old are still using at nearly 3 years.

My current family and I just get in the pool/ocean anytime she wants to go swimming. We started teaching her how to swim from a very young age.

That said, my last family got lifejackets from a box store. I found this one on Amazon- http://www.amazon.com/Stearns-Infant-Classic-Boating-Vest/dp/B00364AKBQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1402957600&sr=1-3&keywords=baby+life+jacket+under+30+lbs

Edit-
We live near the beach and I go with nanny LO all the time. I take a chair like this-http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Brands-Chairs-SC580-149-Aloha-Beach/dp/B006MVMUNG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1402957799&sr=8-5&keywords=lightweight+beach+chairs. A towel, sunscreen, snacks/lunch, beach toys, and a change of clothes for the kiddo. We're pretty low-key. I can fit everything in one bag, carry my chair, and hold onto her hand while we walk from the car to the sand.

I recently bought a life vest for my 27 month old. She's very tiny (24 LBS). I found an infant life vest at Costco that I think was for 1 year and up (around 20 - 30 LBS, if I recall correctly). It fit her very well. Maybe check to see if your local Costco carries them? I saw them as recently as last week.

We're going to San Diego this Saturday for 9 days (woohoo!). My husband's in the navy and will be doing a week long training, so it'll be me and my 18 month old at the beach most days. She likes to run and bellyflop into the water...it's terrifying!

How do you keep your LO's safe at the beach? Life vest? Floaties? Most I find say 30 pounds and up and she's only 24 or so.

Any recommendations on this and really any beach gear would be appreciated! :)
