My LO didn't get many but she showed no signs of them till the ear drum burst. She got tubes at 21 months and 100% worth it. We weren't taking a chance it would cause hearing damage. She started talking more within a month or two.

@My Only Sunshine: thanks for the info. We are in that boat now, every cold results in an ear infection, we get maybe a week without him being sick. Started at 3 months when he went to daycare, and just turned 8 months yesterday with ear infection #5 today.
@PurplePeony: thanks! Heading over to read through it now! ;)

@josina: a few of us had an ear tube thread a couple months ago: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/positive-experiences-with-ear-tubes
My DD has had a couple bouts of sniffles/colds since she got tubes and I'm 100% sure she'd have had an ear infection by now if she didn't have tubes, but she's been fine. She just had her follow-up appointment to check the tubes and test her hearing...it was all good and now I have confirmation that when I've called her name 300 times and she hasn't responded, it's just because she doesn't want to hear me and not because she can't! Haha.

@josina: Yes, she did get tubes in. She had them put in last August after she had one more ear infection after this post.

Overall I would tell you they were a huge game changer and I highly recommend it if your pediatrician and ENT say it's the way to go. She went from getting ear infections every time she got the sniffles to never having one for almost a year.

It's funny this is coming up now, because she actually did just last week come down with another ear infection (her first since the tubes). But we're able to treat it with antibiotic drops in her ears instead of oral antibiotics and she seems back to normal within 2 days of doing the drops.

Let me know if you have other questions! The procedure itself was pretty easy - only took like 10 or 15 minutes and she was really pretty much fine by the time we left the hospital.

@My Only Sunshine: Did your LO get tubes? Hold old and thoughts on it?

I had tubes as a kid as well. A milk allergy further exacerbated my ear infections. My cousin had many recurrent ear infections but no tubes. Sadly, the infections affected her speech once she learned to talk, and even after speech therapy... 20 some years later, she still talks funny because her ears were plugged when she first learned to talk. Obviously this is not common--just one more factor to consider in the long list.

I have no personal experience with this, but I have heard that getting a chiropractic adjustment (or a series of them) can dramatically help some kids with recurrent ear infections! I would definitely try that route before tubes.

I had chronic ear infections as a baby and had to have tubes put in when I was around 2. I remember them taking me in, they have to put little kids and babies under. I got to choose what flavor gas I got, and I fell asleep only to wake up to a new stuffed animal. That's it. Nothing traumatizing. I had to use wax earplugs anytime I got in the water to keep the water out of my ears but my infections were gone. The tubes fell out a few years later.

I need to get new ones put in since I still have chronic infections but they don't put you to sleep as an adult.....

Honestly, tubes were the best things my parents found have done for me and if DD winds up with my crappy infected ears I will do the same for her in a heartbeat.

My son had tubes put in at 14 months old, due to chronic ear infections, and fluid in his ears. He had 8 (confirmed) ear infections up until that point. He has had 2 since, bUt the tubes did their job and drained everything. At his 2 year appointment he still had them in. They will just fall out when the ears outgrow them. If after they fall out, and he begins to get ear infections they will reevaluate to see if he needs a second set.

My son had a lot of ear infections in his first year. We saw an ENT that recommended tubes but we just didn't like the idea of him having surgery, although I hated the constant antibiotics as well but we decided to wait and see what happened and I'm glad we did because he only got maybe one or two more since his first year (he's now 31 months).

It's a tough decision. I know people that got them for their children and they were really happy they did. Good luck with whatever you decide.

@My Only Sunshine: My LO had tubes put in 2 weeks ago (she was 9.5 months old at the time). We were referred to an ENT for persistent ear infections. We chose to do tubes because that's what the ENT recommended and I was tired of her being on antibiotics. She had a hearing test at our initial evaluation which showed slight hearing loss due to the fluid build-up, so we also didn't want the ear infections to impact her speech.

The procedure was quick (less than 10 minutes). The surgery was at 7:30am and we were home by 8:15. LO was fussy the day of the surgery but was back at daycare the next day. She got a cold last week and I know she would've gotten an ear infection if not for the tubes (there was a lot of drainage coming from her ears which was gross but meant the tubes were doing their job). She goes back tomorrow for a follow-up with the ENT and her hearing will be re-tested. The ENT expects that she'll be back in the normal range. He also said they should fall out on their own within a year/year and a half but if they don't they will be removed. Feel free to wall me if you have anymore questions! :)

DS got tubes and his adenoids taken out a few months ago after several ear infections and fluid that wouldn't go away. It was a quick procedure and his ears have been fine since then. The worst part was waking up from anesthesia.

Hey ladies,

Anyone have advice or personal experience with ear tubes? My nine-month-old has her fourth ear infection in five months and our pediatrician told me if she gets another one in the next couple months, we should talk about putting in tubes.

I would love to hear from some mamas who've been through recurrent ear infections - did your LO get tubes? Did they help? How long did they need them? Or will she just outgrow this eventually?
