My stress dreams are always tornado related. I'm never too scared, but they have been progressively getting worse over the years.

Hi, SleppyMonkey! I'm doing sort of a research project on this topic now, and I found that many recurring/stress related dreams relate to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). I find it very interesting that your dreams date back to high school and college, too!

@JessLC: I think the dreams are just traumatic scenarios we've all gone through at some point in our lives, that we tucked away into our subconscious and it comes up in our dreams when we're stressed out!!

@MamaMoose: Losing the teeth-- I have had that dream too, a few times. So freaky!!!

@JessLC: that dream makes my skin crawl!!! never had it, but just thinking about it makes me want to throw up!

@artbee: I have dreams where I'm in a gigantic, dark, maze-like, very dirty public bathroom and I cannot find a stall that is clean or has a door. This is another recurring one that I have, and it is really weird. My brother told me he has the same dream, which is even weirder.

Yes! I have 2 of them. In one of them, I walk into a college lecture and everyone is taking out their pencils and scantrons for the final exam. And then I realize I haven't attend ONE class and it's too late to drop out. The 2nd dream involved me being locked in a tiny tiny room with no windows and I can't figure out how to get out. I hate having those dreams! I always wake up in a panic!

I constantly have your number 2 dream. That exact scenario.

I also have a recurring dream about losing my teeth. This apparently means there is something going on in my life that I wish I could control but can't. Makes sense since I'm a total control freak.

@MsLipGloss: Yikes. That's too bad. Are there things you can do in your waking life to relieve the stress? Talking to someone, meditation? Sometimes it helps if I write down what is stressing me out before I go to bed.

@mrs. wagon: omg that is so funny! I always think that these dreams reflect my fear of being unprepared for life but i dont really feel that way when im awake. Maybe i am suppressing it? The last dream i feel like i am sabotaging myself...i know i have to get somewhere but i keep on getting in the way. So its made me wonder if i am doing that with my career or something. Orrrr i am just overanalyzing my dreams!

@JumpingJacks: In the beginning, my dreams were just really vivid and through-the-looking-glass-ish. Lately, they have been so scary and horrible that when I wake up, I try to stay awake to avoid falling asleep right away and picking up where the dream left off. This past weekend was a new kind of awful though . . . if I close my eyes I can still see (and feel) it happening, and even have some residual feelings of panic. It has been a rough 6 weeks or so (between work and non-stop migraines).

@JessLC: OMG, my dreams are EXACTLY the same as yours. High school, locker combo. Or high school / college, time to go to the next class, and I cannot find my schedule so I don't know where I'm going. It's usually the locker combo though. The funny thing is, when I wake up, I remember the combo I did have through high school (same combo for 4 years) and I repeat it into my head over and over!

The college finals one happens to me ALL the time. I'm heading into the final and I realize that not only have I not been to any classes or done any reading, but I'm not even enrolled in college!!!! But I have to take the test!!!

And the wedding thing!! I have seriously had that EXACT SAME DREAM!!! Sometimes I'm looking for something and I don't even know what it is, so I just keep looking, hoping to remember and find it.

My stress also manifest itself into my dreams. Whatever is currently bothering me will play a part in that dream/nightmare. I used to have re-occurring dreams, but the only two I can remember right now is losing my teeth or that I can never run fast enough to get away from whatever is chasing me.

I've had recurring nightmares (about several random topics, but usually something tragic happening to a loved one). . . I actually woke up this weekend screaming at the top of my lungs. We were glad our neighbors didn't hear and/or call the police! *phew*

@cyneswith: Wow, your dreams are really intense!! Mine seem like a walk in the park compared to yours! I occasionally have weird apocalyptic dreams, but it is usually if eat a big meal or funky cheese or spiced foods that I'm not used to, right before bed.

I've had dreams about medical catastrophes - namely doctors ignoring my history of drug/vaccine reactions and maiming me or my child by willfully doing what I've said must never be done. Which is actually my biggest fear in childbirth (though natural childbirth is my goals, I'd prefer a c-section to epi/cervidil/pitocin/whatever, because I know my body handles anesthetics well.)

My most recent one, doctors gave me pitocin because I had GD at something like 32 weeks, and they insisted the baby had to come then. And the pitocin made me go mostly blind and paralyzed me from the waist down. Fortunately, this made them realize that I wasn't exaggerating about not being able to handle drugs, and they decided that my baby didn't need the Hep B vaccine right away. I still died at the end, but I died knowing my baby escaped my fate for a little while at least.

I also had a dream about Quark from Deep Space Nine selling my child on the black market to Cardassians, because I was unconscious for a few weeks after my baby's birth (due to drug reactions). I then had to hunt down my poor mal-nourished baby (and some other babies/small children) with the help of Nog. Somehow, the warehouse (where they were also smuggling large cats and rare domestic cat breeds for some reason) was essentially my grandpa's garage. But that actually resembles my normal dreams more than the other.

I expect moving related dreams this week - we may have a house secured tomorrow, and start moving on Monday.

I have very similar stress dreams, and so does my husband. I dream that I'm in high school, and I've been skipping my classes, so I don't even know what's going on in them... and finals week is approaching. I also dream that I'm moving to a new house, and it's moving day, but I haven't packed a thing yet. I end up needing to move without being able to bring any of my things with me.

I know some people have trouble falling asleep when they are stressed out. I have no problems falling asleep, but the stress will manifest itself in my dreams. I often have recurring stress dreams. The ones I have repeatedly are:

1. I'm in high school and cannot remember my locker combination. There is a 6 and an 8 in it, but i can never remember the third number, or the order, or if it is 26, 28, 18, etc.

2. I'm in college and its finals week, and I've forgotten that I've registered for a class and there is either a gigantic paper due tomorrow that I haven't started yet or a test that I have yet to start studying for.

3. I'm late for something (e.g. a flight, my wedding) and I keep looking for something that I can't find, like a pair of shoes I want to take with me, so I just keep looking and looking as the minutes tick away.

Does anyone else have recurring stress dreams? If so, what are they?
