After a really terrible rash, I used the prescription ointment anytime I saw pink. It really helped. When it was just irritated I used purple desitin. Those are the only two creams that really worked for us.

How frequently did you apply the Lotrimin? We had a yeast diaper rash that persisted (not recurring) and we used Lotrimin for 2 weeks 3 times a day and it finally went away after two weeks. The nurse practitioner I spoke with said that if we didn't see improvement in two weeks, then we should discuss whether there was some sort of skin reaction or allergy. It sounds like plenty of others have suggested changing wipes and diapers so perhaps a skin allergy is at play. I will say that we didn't start to see improvement for several days while we were using the Lotrimin 3 times a day. I'm not sure this would do anything but perhaps you could try probiotics to help get the yeast under control?

ETA: We also used Bordeaux's butt paste and Aquaphor baby ointment when we weren't using the Lotrimin but I'm not really sure they did anything. We had used them before I realized that yeast diaper rashes were an entirely separate thing from the normal diaper rash.

@Pollywog: @agold: @autumnleaves: @azjax: @gilmoregirl: Thank you all for your suggestions and commiseration! We decided to switch to 7th Generation diapers, water wipes (which actually have water and the grapefruit seed extract that @peaches1038: suggested), continue the nystatin, and Burt's Bees diaper cream for now, doing diaper-free time as we have a chance, and daily baking soda baths. I am getting very frustrated by the whole thing, but realize it is not the end of the world if she is a little rash-y. I need to give myself a break. Each diaper change is taking me like 20+ minutes with all the creams, blowdrying, etc, and I am a bit burned out! Plus, I really just want to get her back into cloth, but maybe I just need to wait for cooler/dryer weather for that!! Poor girl!!

We are currently treating my son for eczema and a persistent yeast rash. There are a couple patches of red on his upper thigh and groin that the nystatin wasn't helping so the doctor suggested I try the steroid cream I use for his eczema and it helped a lot. He did warn that the steroid can exacerbate the yeast, but in this case it was probably worth using (it didn't).

I'm not sure if this is what you're dealing with exactly but I thought I'd throw it out there.

The thing that helps DS the most is lots of diaper free time, especially during the summer when you can get swamp butt even with the AC on.

@GreenThumb: We We had the same thing at the same age. I bleached the prefolds we were using and put in a liner for each change. The only thing that worked was alternating the prescription and athlete foot cream and putting a super thick coat of Burt's bees diaper cream. It took 3 weeks, but was healed and never came back.

it was caused because my washing routine wasn't strong enough to deal with solids poops. I needed to do a pre wash with soap followed by a heavy duty wash.

@GreenThumb: we are using pamper swaddlers too with our almost 15 month old and experiencing similar problems. I am wondering if they changed the diapers because we didn't have this problem with LO1. My guy though has been on antibiotics most of the past 2 months for ear infections. When it starts to clear we are supposed to stop using the nystatin and use Boudreaux butt paste. Our doctor also recommended no wipes, only wet paper towels and then drying his butt before applying the cream/paste. The doctor also said to bathe his bottom half daily. We get it under control but then he goes to daycare and it's awful by the end of the day. Sigh. I hope your little one feels better soon.

@GreenThumb: My chubby baby used to get diaper rash often, and I was using pampers diapers, too. I switched to Huggies and I use the Arbonne diaper rash cream and she hasn't really gotten one since. I change her diapers fairly frequently. I use a Huggies night time diaper at night. I also patted her dry after wiping her during ever diaper change. But I don't have to do that any more. Good luck! Its so sad to see the babies in pain.

@IRunForFun: I hadn't really thought about the towels and washcloths... that is a good idea! Going to do laundry now!!
@Mrs. Lion: That is a good suggestion. Maybe I will skip the cloth wipes for now just in case.
@peaches1038: Thank you for the suggestion about the grapefruit seed extract. I'll give it a try!! And I think the idea of paper towels on the changing pad is a good one, too. We are barely doing solids yet, but I should keep the sugars in check.

Thank you!! I called the pedi and the nurse didn't have anything else to add, ugh! just keep up with the nystatin and call in another week. :bummed:

LO1 had a lot of yeast diaper rash. We would use 7th gen diaper when it was bad. LOTS of no diaper time and making sure you change a poop ASAP helped us. We also gave probiotics and sometimes used a steroid cream when it was really bad. It didn't get to the point where he had to take meds, but I did twice (the first time didn't fix it). Are you breast feeding? Do you have symptoms? We had yeast problems even after he weened.

Potty training was the only real answer and that just happened now at 30 months. I think it could have happened a lot earlier, but I had LO2 and there was just no way.

I've had good luck using diluted grapefruit seed extract. This article is about thrush, but also talks about using the solution on the diaper area. I used the ratio he recommends and it worked great. You can also use it in your laundry.
http://drjaygordon.com/breastfeeding/thrush.html

This is the brand I purchased:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0002JHZO8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1499887585&sr=8-3&keywords=grapefruit+seed+extract

We also stopped using any kind of wipes and would just rinse his bum in the sink. And we made sure to put paper towels over his changing pad and threw them away after every change so we didn't contaminate that.

Another thing that might help is giving your LO probiotics (we mixed it in his bottles) and cutting any sugar (fruit) if she's eating solids since yeast feeds on sugar.

Good luck!

@Mrs. Lion: We are bleaching the wipes after every use, so I thought that would solve the problem there. I know that the regular disposable wipes can be a problem with yeast rash. I'm at a loss.

Our daughter gets rashy with any diaper OTHER than 7th Generation. We tried a bunch of other brands and that was the only one that worked. And I pretty much use diaper cream with every diaper change (we like the 7th Generation Coconut Care cream).

My 7m has had a long term diaper rash that was diagnosed as yeast by the ped. We've switched to disposables, did 2 weeks of lotramin, almost finished with 2 weeks of nystatin, diaper-free time, cloth wipes (mostly), and I still see areas of rash. She is SUPER chubby, so it is really challenging to keep her folds dry even using the hair dryer. Anyone have some additional advice? We are using pampers swaddlers, but I'm wondering if a diaper brand switch might help?
