@zippylef: I LOVE Moscato and White Zin and just recently discovered Roscato at Olive Garden, which is a red wine and is AMAZING. If you like Moscato, you HAVE to try their Roscato. I'm not sure if it's available elsewhere or not, but it's really delicious for a red wine!

Definitely find a place to do some tasting, or visit a wine shop and tell them exactly what you've posted here...it's a big world of wine, but depending on where you live, you can find some new favorites.

Even before digging into red wines...are there dryer or more full bodied white wines that you take an interest in?

Lastly, since you like whites with some, but not too much sugar, you might want to try some German Rieslings as well. They come in the full range of bone dry to sweet and can help you ease into a new realm of wine.

I think for white wine drinkers, pinot noirs are some of the easiest reds to start with. My favourite reds tend to be malbecs or shiraz, but pinot noir is a great starting point.

agree with previous posters - pinot noir is a great starter red wine because it is light, but can have some complex flavors to them. pinots from willamette valley in oregon are excellent. the climat there is suited to growing those kinds of grapes.

Pinot Noir, Malbec, Syrah or Shiraz, there are some light spanish reds that I can't think of the names right now.

Go to a good wine store or wine bar and ask for a light-tasting wine. "light" NOT sweet. Sweet wines are disgusting to me.

Best yet is to order a tasting.

@littlebug: & @BabyBoecksMom: I really enjoy gewurztraminer and white zin. So I suppose sweeter whites are my thing. But not too sweet! I've had some dessert wines that I couldn't drink because it was sweeter than I expected. I'll look for a pinot nior and try that, thanks!

ETA: thanks for all the suggestions ladies :)

Do you have any shops around you that do wine tastings? That's a great way to start.

Our local liquor shop, a wine shop and a grocery store all do weekly wine tastings and have people on hand to help you pick wines you might like.

Agree on the Pinot Noir - it's like a gateway drug. :) Malbecs are good too.

Pinot noir is a light, easy to drink red. Also mixed reds are good too. Apothic Red comes to mind.

What kind of white wine do you drink?

I used to only drink white wine because ever red I drank seemed so ... dry... I liked the white because they were cold and refreshing. DH got me to try some reds and now I can hardly drink whites. Crazy how that happens!

I started off with a pinot nior and I really enjoy those. Now, I'll typically drink a malbec or a zinfindel, since they go well with just about any food.

If you're mostly a white drinker, I would steer clear of cabernet at first - they tend to be dry, and I hated them when I first started drinking reds. I like pinot noir - it's usually on the sweeter, softer side, with deep yummy plum and berry flavors.

I like white wines and I'd love to branch out and try some Reds, but I don't know where to start. Any red wine lovers have any suggestions?
