My birthday is 8/30 so I was one of the youngest in my classes and I hated being last to turn 16, get my license, etc. My son will be one of the oldest I guess, since his birthday is 9/28 and the cut-off here is 9/1. I think for him it'll be good since currently he has quite a few delays and I've heard for boys it is better if they are older in certain circumstances.

We'll have an April baby, so no decisions to be made for us.

I'm an August baby, and I was sent on time, because I needed the social interaction. Academically and socially, I did fine. I will say, though, that there were things that were difficult for me up until probably 4th grade-things like remembering to bring all of the homework home, getting things signed, organization in general, etc. I was a really good student and OK developmentally, but I had a hard time with logistics. I eventually grew out of it, but there were days that it was a real struggle. I am not sure what the option would have been, though, because I am pretty sure my parents were right-I would have been SO. BORED. had I been held back a grade that I'm not sure the benefits would have been worth it.

My sister, on the other hand, is a September baby, and my parents chose to wait a year to send her. I think it honestly just depends on the child.

Wont be an issue for my May baby, but from a personal perspective I feel like it doesn't really matter that much. I have a late October birthday and was right past the cut-off for my school district so I was meant to be the oldest in my class. I went through kindergarden-2nd grade that way and it was fine except I was clearly ahead of the other kids academically, so they ended up skipping me to 4th grade the next year, then making me the youngest in the class. Also fine. I never had any issues with it really until late high school/college actually. It did suck a little being like, the LAST one to get my license. And when I went to college I was only 17, so I couldn't get into any of the college bars (18+) for over 2 months, which really sucks when you're first trying to make friends at school! Then in law school I was 20 for the first 2 months, and that was weird because most people in law school are mid-late 20s anyways and so they wanted to go to the non-college bars (i.e. 21+) and again... trying to make friends and having to tell people I'm not old enough to get into the place they're going after classes. Lame haha.

But those are honestly minor issues and didn't come up until I was basically an adult when I was more than equipped to deal with them.

I would only redshirt my child if the pre-kindergarten screening showed an issue that might resolve itself with extra time. There seems to be a recent phenomena of people redshirting their children so that they'll have an advantage in sports which I think is completely ridiculous.

Eta: I was born on Sept 29 and the cutoff for my district was Sept 30. I was always the youngest in my classes. I had no problems academically, though I was a little behind socially. Nothing that would stop me from sending my child on time, though.

My bday is Sep 2nd, and when I was little the cutoff where we lived was the 1st. My parents got me in anyway, because I was so advanced that I would have been VERY bored if I'd been held back. The problem is that in terms of maturity, I wasn't ready. I was always a little behind in maturity compared to my friends/classmates, and it occasionally caused issues. I don't know what they could have done differently, since I was genuinely too advanced to wait, but it wasn't in my best interests to start early either. I think ideally homeschool or something similar would have worked much better for me, but it wasn't an option.

We don't plan to do this. The cutoff here is 9/1 and LO was born 8/3 so she'll be one of the youngest in her class (she'll turn 5 about a month before she enters Kindergarten). But I'm fine with it as long as she's on track developmentally. DH was actually excited when he found out we were having an August baby--one less year of daycare/preschool expenses!

My son is a Dec birthday and we have a Dec 31 cut off at the moment. I am certain he will be able to handle the academics, but I am not sure about his emotional readiness.

This September, he will be in a private preschool and we'll see how that goes. If I don't feel he is ready for public K, the school has a Kindergarten program and he will attend that. Then he'll go to 1st grade in the public schools.

We're in the same place as @tinyperson: . In my heart I feel like 3 is too young, but hopefully we'll be living back.in the UK by then where you start school aged 4 so we don't have to make the choice. If we do have to decide, I'll have to look at where she is emotionally and intellectually and then see. I guess we'd also need to get her into a part time program before as she's home with me now so it might be a big shock for her.

L has a May birthday, but baby #2 is due in October, and although we'll see how things go, I think that I would rather wait until they're almost 6 to put them in kindergarten than have them start at just 4 years old. My cousin started kindergarten at age 4, and although she did okay academically, socially it was more of a struggle. She always wanted to catch up with the older kids and that was often not a great thing!

Cut off here is anywhere from Dec 1 to 31 depending on what district we settle in. I'd much rather her go early than hold her back a year so I'm hoping if we're in a Dec 1 cutoff situation that they'll let her in through observation.

Our cutoff is 4 by Dec 31. We have JK and SK here in Ontario. LO was born Dec 5, so she'll be starting JK at 3 years, 9 months — and most classes have JK & SK together.

I'm not sure what we'll do. She's in daycare now with some older and some younger, and that split will likely continue as she moves up through the rooms, but I think we just have to see where she's at when the time comes!

My DS is an early September baby and the cutoff is 9/1. He will turn six just a few weeks after starting Kindergarten. As of now, I have no issue with that. But I'm definitely keeping my options open. I would have to keep him in private school until the end of first grade per our school district's rules in order to put him in early.

My DD is a late August baby and just makes the cutoff, making her the youngest in her class. We sent her to Kinder per the cutoff.

Charlie is a December baby and the cut-off here is Dec 31st. I can definitely see the benefits of redshirting for him.. some of his friends born in the beginning of the year look like 6 year olds and Charlie is very small. Boys also just have a harder time sitting still so girls born in Jan are like 2 years ahead of him.

But I think he would be bored so I've always leaned toward sending him on time. We don't have the option to hold him back anyway!

This is something I've thought a lot about. DS' birthday is Sept 9 and in our district the cut-off is, and doesn't appear to be changing, 5 by Sept 30. DH and my plan is to send him "on time" but also know that this decision may change based upon his maturity level at the time (he's currently 18m so hard to say). I know that redshirting has impacted DD. Even though she started preschool "on time" at 3, she is the second youngest in her class (turns 4 today). When talking with her teacher it was noted that she some of her behaviors are behind the other students but then the teacher acknowledged that she is on target for her actual age and that some classmates are a full year older.

In our county, the cutoff is Sept 1 (both boys are early/mid Sept), but you can apply for early admission if their birthday is before Oct 15th. I will probably apply for DS1 to get early admission, because I think it would challenge him more to be on the younger side than the older side. For DS2, since he was 2 months early and has extreme delays, unless something drastically changes I won't apply for him to go early.

Hmm. Back in the day, NC's cut off date was Oct 15. I'm a Sept baby, so I was always the youngest. It never really bothered me too much though. Now, it's August 31. LO will be almost 6 in kindergarten because his birthday is in November.

Teaching pre-k (kids have to be 4 by August 31), there are kids all over the spectrum. Some of my Summer babies are actually way ahead (academically and socially) of the kids who turned 5 in the fall.
