@septemberlove: This is really great to hear. Big, big, big hugs for you - I can only begin to imagine how hard this time has been for you but you are clearly doing such a great job and your little boy is going to be just fine. Give him a snuggle from me, from the other side of the world!

@Cherrybee: thanks :) he's doing really well. Eats like champ, has had way more than the minimum wet diapers, and sleeps very well too. The NICU had him on a schedule, which we've maintained and he has just been an absolute dream baby.

@T.H.O.U.: Thanks :)

@septemberlove: I don't know anything about hearing tests for babies but I wanted to drop in and say I'm thinking of you. I'm sure it will all be fine. Apart from that, how's he doing? And how are you? ((hugs))

He referred a second time and the hospital's next step is an audiologist. We have an appt in a month.

LO started to respond to the test then stopped. I hope it's just fluid, or maybe related to him being a preemie. He got up to 77% in one ear before he just stopped responding. The other attempt he'd had about 55% response to the machine for each ear.

I've watched to see how he does with noises and if it's a sudden noise, he startles. If he's pretty zonked out, it doesn't startle him. But when he's awake, if the dog barks, he jumps.

I hope everything turns out okay.

If he's responding to sounds that sounds like a great sign! In the newborn days my mom gave me a great piece of advice to help me hang in there when it's still day by day- "it's not a problem until it's a problem." As in, don't stress about things that MIGHT happen because lots could go wrong.

I've been in the newborn special care nursery quite a few times and it's pretty loud in there compared to the absolutely silent room they conduct the other newborns' tests in, so I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Thank you for the reassurance :) I'm very hopeful he'll pass but regardless, I'll still be by his side and we'll figure it out together.

P had to have a hearing test down that the ENT when she was a couple/few weeks old. Even there it took a couple times, but that was a positioning issues with her teeny tiny ear canals. Once the lady got them positioned right she passed just fine. We were supposed to have a follow up at 8 months but didn't really feel the need as she seems to hear just fine. =)

Also, my older one had to have his redone as well which they figured was from him having been born via cesarean & not getting all that fluid pushed out! His second time was great! =)

I wouldn't worry. As others have said, this is very common. My daughter was full-term, never needed a NICU stay, and she still failed her hearing test twice in the hospital. She passed on her third try a couple of weeks later as an outpatient. I was pretty sure she could hear b/c she was definitely responding to the machine... just not enough to get a full pass. DH and I also reminded ourselves that even if DD was hard of hearing, that was something we could handle and certainly not the worst news one could get about their baby's health. Good luck, and I'm sure your baby will pass too!

@Septemberlove- my son was tested in the newborn nursery and did not passed the test the first time. Two weeks later, I took him back to get his hearing check again and he passed (it took a while as the screening lady said that my son's waves were quite busy so she had to try a few times but did not give up on him). My son is now 3 months and is cooing up a storm. :)

I hope all goes well for your lo tomorrow and if it doesn't, wait for the final outcome. I know it is hard but it sounds like you have been very positive through your lo's stay in the NICU so far, keep it up. :) My son was also in the NICU, too! I know how hard it is not to be able to hold your lo and have your lo home with you.

Hi there. I'm a pediatrician. Even full-term infants get a "refer" all the time in the newborn nursery - the vast, vast majority of them will pass on repeat testing in a couple of weeks. Even if your little one doesn't pass tomorrow, I wouldn't freak out. Most of the hospitals around me will try 3 times in the hospital, then refer to try again as an outpatient. I frequently get patients that needed that extra attempt outside the hospital setting, a couple weeks after discharge, to pass. It's really common...

Did your LO refer? What was the outcome?

LO is in the NICU right now and the lady who conducts the screening tests said the NICU machines can interfere with the hearing test machine and that a lot of NICU LOs refer. They're going to repeat the test tomorrow.

LO reacts to sounds, though not everything. I think he's used to the monitors beeping at this point, but if something drops and makes a sudden noise, he jumps. He also follows my husband's voice pretty well. When he's upset and I talk to him, it seems to calm him. I'm really hoping he passes tomorrow.
