@Pollywog: I keep telling myself - this isn’t going last forever. Luckily my husband is also basically vegan, he’s joking that I’m going on his diet. Maybe it will help me lose the baby weight. And hopefully it will pay off in a few weeks for the reflux

@periwinklebee: good to know I could still have the tongue tie corrected - she’s only 9 weeks now. I’m going to ask the ent opinion tomorrow.

@Kaohinani: aw it sounds like your DD really went through it...I’m curious as to how the hernias were diagnosed ?

I was really enjoying my coffee after the baby was born as I hadn’t drank it throughout my pregnancy. Coffee without (cows) milk is really pointless for me though. I think I have made it through the worst of the caffeine withdrawal.

We did get a little wedge for her bassinet. She seems to slide down it overnight but she’s still pretty tiny so I think it’s ok.

@magnolia: That's the other frustrating thing :meh: , they say it can take three weeks for stuff to work its way totally out of your system. In my experience though if it is something your baby is super sensitive to you should notice a difference much more immediately.

My son also had a tongue tie, that we didn't get diagnosed and fixed until around 11 weeks (ped we saw didn't believe in tongue ties, ugh). He wasn't eating and gaining well and it made a huge difference for that. They said it would help his reflux but I didn't notice an improvement in that. It was pretty painless though to correct.

Good luck :goodluck: :goodluck:

@periwinklebee: green tea sounds so good after 5 days without coffee. I wonder how long it takes for the dietary stuff to help/work through the body/milk?!

@RKitty: thank you! She does have a tongue tie. I decided against getting it clipped when I took her at 3 weeks old to the ent because she was eating and gaining well. Now I’m wondering if I should do it...

@paigeface: yes, our doctor wants us to keep trying it as well. She definitely hates the taste! I got a little wedge pillow for her bassinet that goes underneath the sheet to put her on an incline.

@magnolia: I too have noticed that she spits up more on the raniditine! Per my pediatricians advice I am giving her a full two weeks again to see if it helps (we took her off of it when we saw more fussiness?) However, if shes not improving on it by her two month checkup on the 29th I am taking her back off of it. We put the dock-a-tot in the Halo (some might not feel comfortable doing this but we do after monitoring her in it for several weeks) and this creates a slight incline.

@paigeface: thank you mama. She seems to hate the taste of it. She actually had a pretty good week without actually spitting up but the past two days since she started the medication she has been spitting up more

She seems to be a “happy spitter” and doesn’t get upset when it happens or when she eats.

Can you put the halo bassinet on an incline?? I didn’t know that.

Our DD who is 2 months has silent reflux as well and is on the raniditine twice a day 1 ml. First off, hugs to you because having a baby with reflux just plain sucks! I've had two now! We haven't been on the raniditine long enough to say if it's working or not as my pediatrician told us to give it a full two weeks to see a difference. I am no longer EBF and she is all FF fed now so I am no help in the diet department :( I have a lot of friends who said that changing their diet didn't always help with reflux as others have stated above. My pediatrician pointed out that it is usually a few months and that it may get worse before it gets better but it WILL pass as their digestive systems mature. I do think we are in the thick of it now and she spits up quite a bit but she is a happier baby now that we are doing the sitting up right 30-50 mins after feeds, inclining her Halo bassinet etc. Raniditine won't cure or solve reflux but might make them more comfortable during feeds as it blocks some of that acid from coming back up. Unfortunately, I feel like the only thing that will heal the reflux is time. My son had it pretty bad too and he grew out of by 4-5 months. He's 4 now and has no issues at all. Hugs!! It will get better.

Raniditine helped my son's reflux a lot. My husband wasn't a big fan of medicating a baby, but the times we tried to back down on it at his insistence (before DS outgrew the reflux), he would be in visible pain.

Dairy elimination did not work well for us. It turns out my son has severe allergies to tree nuts, sesame, and egg. And if I couldn't eat dairy, what did I replace it with (yup, nuts and eggs, which made things worse). :meh: Just to say, try it, but if it is not working for you the science behind what you need to eliminate is not great and can vary from baby to baby. Dairy is a common trigger, but your baby may have completely different triggers, or may not be affected by what you eat at all. So don't be hesitant to experiment and just eat what seems to work for you.

I would drink a cup of green tea in the morning - not that much caffeine but it helped. And eliminating it for a few weeks made no difference, so I went back to it....

I also had my kids sleep on my arm. They were fine with 1 cup of coffee, but no dairy (soy, gluten, eggs, and nuts). It sucked, but it was for such a short time. We are still off dairy and gluten, but he can now tolerate cheese, butter, and baked dairy (not yogurt).

What helped with the diet was to figure out what I could eat. I had a gluten free bagel from trader Joe's with earth balance butter every morning. I ate tons of fruit and veggies, rice, and grilled meat. It wasn't fun, but it made such a difference

@magnolia: I feel for you. With exception to the laryngomalacia, my DD (now 11) had also had reflux [caused by 2 hernias]. (Note - Although her hernias have healed, she STILL takes Pepcid for her reflux --- life long battle, I suppose.) As a small infant, she was also placed on raniditine and Alimentum (for supplementing my BF endeavors), and I was told to begin an "elimination diet" if I were going to continue to BF. There are many amazing soy, nut, and "alt-dairy" non-dairy products out there. I found "low acid" orange juice and tomato products did not effect my DD the same as more full-bodied acidic products. I have to refrain from broccoli, asparagus, and kale as well .... with was difficult for me because I love my veggies and salads. I gave up chocolate (and could supplement with carob chips or syrup if I needed to). Once my DD was semi-stable. Her pediatrician stated that I could have a single 6-8 oz cup of coffee (my one vice that I can not kick) daily if it were in a time 2-4 hours out from her next feed.... I circumvented the issue by pumping and dumping that breastmilk and giving my DD a bottle of Alimentum mid-morning instead.
(Perhaps, you would be able to adhere to the diet but still have the small morning cup o' joe?)

Also, to respond to your question on a wedge, we were advised to place a wedge pillow (used for GERD in adults) under DD's crib mattress to create an incline. It worked but, sometimes, I would find she slid down a bit. We purchased a medical "side sleeper" wedge and tried that but DD was a restless sleeper (still is!) and would end up on her back "wedged in." While my DH deployed, I chose to co-sleep with her (propped on my arm) as I am a super-light sleeper. Between propping her as she co-slept and letting her nap upright on a seat wedge (* I swear, my home was inundated with 50 varieties of wedge! 🤦‍♀️🤣) or in her carseat carrier, my DD was fine. (* I do understand that physical co-sleeping and allowing a baby to sleep in a carseat is, generally, discouraged, especially with current infant sleep recommendations, but it was the ONLY way she would/could sleep and wasn't in pain or projectile vomiting. Her pediatrician "okayed" it at the time.)
In any case, things DO get better with time.
Hugs

My LO had/had silent reflex. The raniditine helped a ton but didn't resolve our reflux issue and I know another mom who it made a huge difference for too.

I tried dairy-free and it didn't make a difference but avoiding caffeine seemed to help. I've noticed since I've started a Paleo diet I've seen a difference (but she's 8 months so it could be developmental).

It's up to you but the incline can help allot with reflux and if your doc recommended it then that means he feels the benefits outweigh the risks. But I'm not familiar at all with the other condition your LO has. ( Mine sleep on my arm as we bed shared.) But you can see if the meds and diet changes help first and then if not try the incline.

Last maybe check into chiropractic care and tongue/ lip ties. The ties could be affecting feeding which can cause the reflux. As for chiropractic I have a friend who swears a couple if visits resolved their LO reflux and a few that said it improved it. I never noticed a change but my chiropractic had us work on tension on my LO jaw (stretches and massages) that I noticed a huge difference in breastfeeding with.

Good luck!

My baby is 2 months old - at her check up yesterday , the pediatrician thinks she has reflux (in addition to laryngomalacia which was diagnosed a few weeks ago by an ENT). He prescribed raniditine which I have started her on.

Since she is breastfed he recommended I eliminate dairy, caffeine, citrus, tomato and chocolate

He also suggested I elevate her bed/mattress

Any recommendations on adjusting to this crazy diet?! I felt pretty awful today with no coffee

Also any recommendations on a bassinet or mini crib wedge? I’m pretty scared of putting anything in her bed since she already has breathing issues. She sleeps in a bassinet next to our bed
