@bees_knees: haha, it’s a close call for me!

We went back to the pediatrician this morning and saw a different doctor and they confirmed it’s just a cold and while they could prescribe Zantac, they would rather hold off for now since he’s doing well growth wise (95%!) but we may revisit that if this issue continues once the cold clears. She seemed to think this was all the colds fault which I’m happy to accept since that means it could end soon. She didn’t think cutting out dairy would have any impact, but I might try that in a week if this continues but don’t want to have too many variables in play at once. Sigh, fingers crossed. Poor guy has been sick 1/2 his life.

@cityliving: I know, the diet stinks. But so does having a miserable baby that doesn’t sleep! And for me, sleep > food. :silly:

Our LO2 had something similar and was put on zantac for reflux very early on. I believe he was only 2 weeks old. I was already on a dairy free diet (pro-actively, as his big sister was extremely sensitive to dairy), so we knew that wasn't the issue. Our pediatrician told us that these days, she recommends going dairy free first, then trying meds. That said, I truly believe more moms are going dairy free than who need to these days. You could try that first for a week or two, but if it doesn't help, I'd definitely look into getting meds. They made a world of difference for my little guy (and incidentally, he didn't actually need me to be dairy free, so I was able to eat my normal diet pretty soon after).

@Mrs. Champagne: @bees_knees: A milk allergy was actually what I’ve been wondering about because the stuffy nose has lingered so much, but besides the reflux he has no other symptoms. His big sister had MSPI so I’ve been on the lookout, but so far his symptoms have been totally different and his diapers are fine. I may suck it up and give it a try, but I’ve been saving that as a last ditch effort because I’m selfish and find the diet so restrictive.

@peaches1038: Ugh, watching him soothe with milk right after he spits up is such a sad cycle. Thanks for the tip, I’m checking out the website now!

I just wanted to chime in and say that good weight gain does not mean that the reflux is not an issue. I had this same problem with DS and because he gained weight well, I was always dismissed even though he had so many other signs. Some babies eat way more because it soothes them at first, but then it creates more reflux, so they eat more to soothe themselves again and it creates a nasty cycle. Anyway, I found the site refluxrebels.com to be very helpful. Once I felt more confident in my knowledge, I was able to better advocate for my son. He did awesome once he started Zantac. Good luck!!

I would follow MSPI diet for a couple weeks to see if it makes an improvement. It won’t hurt anything to try!

Isn't a stuffy nose a sign of a milk allergy? Maybe google that and see if there are other symptoms he has!

@Shantuck: hmm she didn’t. That said we had a health scare when he was 3 days old that resulted in a very thorough workup at the children’s hospital including abdominal X-rays, and I think part of her assessment was the fact that he was anotomicaly fine.

Did your ped say when he would be old enough to medicate? My son has reflux and we were on medication at 8 weeks and it made a world of difference for him.

ETA: My ped said that the way to definitively determine if it is reflux is to see an ENT and they can swab and officially diagnose reflux. Usually, they don't bother with that though because there aren't really side effects so it is usually just best to try the meds and see if they help.

My 1 month old has always spit up a lot, but since he is too young to really medicate (per the pediatrician) and gaining weight well we are leaving it as a laundry issue for now. At two weeks he got a stuffy nose after his big sister had a runny nose for a few days. We are now 12 days in despite a daily protocol of a nightly humidifier, camping out in the bathroom every morning by the steamy shower, and saline drops and aspirator as needed with no end in site.

What’s more is that despite holding him upright for 30minutes- 1 hour after breastfeeding, if I transfer him to the rock and play (the bassinet with a wedge never worked) he will still sleep for 5-10 minuets and then sputter, make a gagging noise, and wake up about 85% of the time. I’m assuming this is because even with the incline and extra digestion time he’s getting reflux and can’t breath properly from his nose. He ends up doing almost all of his sleeping in my arms then instead (or in the carrier during the day.) I’m exhausted. What’s odd to me is that he can sleep in a mildly inclined cross cradle position no problem so I’m not sure if maybe it’s better when he’s on his side.

Has anyone dealt with this? Any tips? Could this be an allergy or something causing these symptoms instead of reflux + a cold? I’m following up with our pediatrician too but would love any and all advice right now. Thank you!!
