@Mrs Green Grass: so Prevacid was more effective? I'm trying to find some literature on differences between the two?

Gave R a bottle before bed last night just to see....he acted refluxy after but no spitting up. And slept 4 hours which is a record for him. Hmm.

@winniebee: My LO has silent reflux. We started on Zantac and it took a few days to work, then worked for about a week. We upped the dosage, and that worked for a few days, then Zantac stopped working altogether, so our ped switched him to omeprazole (Prilosec). That started working within about 3-4 days. Since then we have upped the dosage but overall the omeprazole is working great! Sorry that you have to wait for a GI appointment; that really sucks! I hope you get some good meds soon.

When it's real deal reflux, medicine is what is needed. It's frustrating that you have to wait to get something! It sounds like you are already doing all of the other stuff. D got Prisolec first, then Prevacid, which he was on for over a year.

Actually, thickening feedings did help for D, it's harder for the food to come back up, but that doesn't work if he's breast fed...

DS was on Zantac and that worked for about a month and then we went through hell. Like nonstop screaming for 10 days hell. Ped put him on Nutramigen for 2 weeks. We switched him to Prevacid and within 3 days he was much better. He's back on mostly pumped milk but I am off dairy, acidic foods, cruciferous veggies, tea, chocolate, coffee, etc. Sucks.

@blackbird: yeah I was pretty annoyed. Basically the referral takes 2 days to process and then we are seen within a week. So we don't even have an appt yet Bc as of today gi didn't have the referral. I'm going to take first available regardless of convenience. I really hope I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket here but it seems so classic reflux to me.

@winniebee: what?!?! What if you call the GI office and see if they'll look at his records and call something in in the meantime?! You shouldnt have to wait forever for your LO to be seen. Maybe there's an upcoming cancellation you can have. I remember this stage well and I would be harassing people!!!

@winniebee: We saw some improvement in the spit up (he still did it as often but it wasn't quite as much). The huge improvement was in the pain though. I still remember when he first spit up then yawned and settled into my arms to relax. It was amazing, didn't seem to bother him at all.

@winniebee: We are on a strong dose of Lansoprazole (Prevacid) at 2 1/2 with is a PPI. We've done pretty much every type of drug out there and they keep adjusting us every few months. OUr GI proscribed it for us after xrays and a scope. Our daughter's reflux was so bad that it caused her to have bad cells come up and rest in her esophagus, which made us use an inhaler type medicine (she swallowed it instead of using a nebulizer, they compared it to asthma of the esophagus instead of lungs.) So my best advice is, be persistent, be informed, but ultimately listen to the GI. They see enough of it (is your GI a pediatric one? that would be important to me.)

@winniebee: We definitely had the fountains of spit up with the clawing and back arching and crying. Your daytime situation sounds much worse than ours though (at that age my little guy was eating every 4 hours and was never one to nurse to sleep). We were only on Zantac alone for 3 days as I was impatient and knew a H2 blocker should have quick results. Once the Prevacid was started we saw drastic improvement in 2-3 days.

@winniebee: Sorry, I don't remember because we were dealing with some complicated BFing issues and it all blurs together at this point.. But at some point he stopped screaming every time he spit up. Probably within a few weeks at the most. And that's great that you'll be seen within a week! Ask the GI about Omeprozole for sure. As annoying as every 2 hours is, thats keeping his weight up. Maybe once he gets treated he will be able to spread it out.

DS was initially put on Zantac but it didn't seem to help much. We moved on to Prevacid twice daily but it was really hard because you had to give it then wait 20-30 minutes to let him eat. Ended up using Prevacid every morning then Zantac at bedtime which was the winning combination for us.

@Mrs.Someone: the pediatrician isn't comfortable with prescribing anything other than stupid Zantac. But she did request that we be seen by GI within a week (and that was yesterday). I am hounding GI.... How long until you saw full effects of Prilosec?

We were there at 8w or so too, it was awful! It caused DS to not want to eat as much, making my milk supply go down slowly. We were referred to OT for feeding, and in the 3 weeks that we were waiting things went from bad to worse. Zantac didn't do anything for him (I think it made it worse too), but when he got on Omeprozole things started getting better. Can you ask your pediatrician for it before waiting for the GI consult?

I think the best med in terms of reflux is omeprazole. It is in a different class than Zantac and actually reduces the acid instead of just trying to neutralize it. I've seen a lot of babies improve very quickly after they started on it!!

In the meantime, I think you're doing everything you can! Keeping him upright after feeds etc. Have you tried smaller, more frequent feeds? Apparently some people find cutting out soy helps too. The good news is even though he's in pain he's still gaining weight, so you're obviously doing the right thing!! Good luck :goodluck:

R is now 8 weeks old and has "real deal reflux" (term used by an LC I saw and confirmed by pediatrician).

He started spitting up around 2 weeks and by 4 weeks it was moderate. By 6 weeks it was getting bad, like after most feeds bad, and burps and gas seemed to really bother him. We put him on Zantac at 6 weeks.

By 7.5 weeks his spit up was pretty severe (sometimes fountains of spit up and spit up after every feeding) and I was worried about his weight gain. Good news is he is gaining weight like a little piggy still 1/2 lb a week. Pediatrician gave us a GI referral and at 8 weeks we are still waiting to be seen by GI. Zantac has done absolutely nothing for baby R, if anything he is much worse since going on Zantac. After feeds he is so unsettled. He arches, claws at my chest, tries to like crawl up my chest. Cries. It is heartbreaking....otherwise he is a happy little dude. He is EBF on demand and nurses every 2 hours during the day still (lucky me!)

Sleep is awful. He can do a 3 hour stretch but then is up for awhile in pain. Then we get some smaller stretches. He used to nurse to sleep easily during the day but not is woken nearly immediately by spit up, pain, etc. So he's barely sleeping during the day now.

Any tips for us while we wait for the GI consult? We keep him upright 30 mins after feeds, burp him often, and he sleeps on an incline. I went off dairy at 1m but just cut the big stuff....at 6 weeks I got strict about it (pediatrician said no evidence it helps reflux...but I just figured I should).

What meds worked for your baby? How long did it take for them to work? We are sort of desperate here.
