My LO had his clipped at 5.5 months and was inconsolable for about 48 hours, he wouldn't latch, wouldn't look at a bottle - I had to cup feed him. It took him about 2.5 weeks to relearn how to use his tongue, but I think younger LOs are often quicker!

@Foodnerd81: she gets so excited about bf there isn't really a way to keep her drowsy. This morning I has her almost asleep in my arms and the minute a pulled my boob out she got frantic. :(

@Mae: I'm sorry you are still dealing with all these issues! You are working for hard for your little girl. I haven't dealt with this personally, but I was wondering if there is any difference if she is awake or really drowsy? Maybe if she is drowsy she would be able to latch without getting so frantic? I hope once she feels better you can get it to work!

@MrsRcCar: @Mrs. Deer: Thank you so much for telling me it will get better! I had never heard of this happening after tt clipping (everyone made it sound like omg no big deal) and I was so scared I ruined our ability to bf forever :( I will keep at it and hope it improves. I was able to BF her at 6:30 this morning after a bit of work. She still fought me but eventually gave in and did it, more like her 9:30 feeding than her 3am feeding which just didn't happen.

@AprilFool: I do cross cradle for the left and football for the right. I have a hard time controlling her head with my left hand. I don't think the milk is coming too fast... I have low supply so I actually always have to express a bit of milk to even get her interested in the boob and remind her that milk IS coming if she's a little patient.

@Kemma: He gave us stretching/rubbing instructions to make sure it didn't re-attach, but no sucking exercises. She did also not really want her binky yesterday (I assumed bc her mouth hurt and it wasn't worth it to her if there was no milk)... but she had no issues with bottles. She seems to like her binky a bit more this morning so hopefully that will help. I don't think giving her more boob time would really help... it wasn't that she didn't want to latch. It seemed like she wanted to and couldn't and was getting angry. She wasn't upset when I laid her down on me and as soon as I pulled a boob out she did what she always does (starts frantically mouthing like omgggggg lunch!) and was clearly trying to latch but just couldn't make it work in a way she was happy with. She just got increasingly upset and then wouldn't even let me hold her :( DH had to take her to calm her down away from the boobs.

@Mrs. Deer: Yep, giving her tylenol. definitely helps! And yea.. I think for now I just have to keep with the pumping/feeding schedule we've had. Part of me wants to offer the boob as much as possible to help her get over this faster, but I know my LC did not recommend it and for my own sake I really shouldn't because I don't want to put myself behind in healing. :(

@Mae: this happened to me,but I assumed it was because LO was so old by the time her tt was discovered and clipped--almost 3 months old. Anyway, I worked on it for a full 2 weeks before I gave up because LO was screaming---I mean, out and out screaming--when I tried to get her to latch and since she was an easygoing baby who rarely cried, I felt like I was traumatizing her and gave up.

In your case, since you guys used to totally bf, I really think she will figure it out---as you plan, keep offering her the breast and have an LC come over and help you.

Good luck mama.

I so remember going through this. It will pass and get better!

Are you giving her Tylenol? She may just be hurting still. Will she take a bottle? If so just keep resting, healing, pumping, and offering the breast when you can. It may take a few days to get back into the swing of things. You're doing a great job mama, keep it up!

I have zero experience with this, but it's only day one (since the procedure), so give it a little time. Maybe Fiona just needs to relearn the process.

I'm so sorry you've had constant BF issues but I really admire how much you're trying to work everything out! I hope it gets easier soon.

@Mae: I'm sorry you're having such a rough time of it, bf'ing issues suck! Did the Dr who did the clipping give you any exercises to do to help your LO get used to her "new" tongue? Sometimes it can almost be like re-learning how to latch and it can take a little time to get the hang of it.

You could try getting her to suckle on your pinky finger (nail to the tongue) to help remind her that the sucking / nursing action is good, it might also calm her down enough to get latched. My other thought would be for you both to get topless so you can be skin to skin and your LO can have free access to the breast and just gently encourage her to latch while keeping it low key.

Sending lots of good nursing vibes your way!!

I am so sorry it wasn't a straight fix. What position are you nursing in? Maybe the milk is coming too fast for her now? Maybe try nursing when she isn't so hungry so she can relearn her latch. When I saw the LC before we cut LO TT she wanted me to lean back and allow her to worm her way down to the boob. Maybe some intense skin to skin and on demand nursing may help. Set yourself up in bed and stay there for as long as can. I hope it gets better soon!

I'm at wit's end. We've had a litany of breastfeeding issues culminating in our getting LO's lip and posterior tongue tie clipped this morning.

We nursed in the office right after the procedure, and she did okay although it was a little hard to get her latched on because she was still crying from the procedure and I thought she was just too upset (but she did ultimately latch after a minute or two).

But now she won't nurse. I didn't realize it during the day because my LC still wants me pumping mostly to try to repair the damage she has done to my nipples. So I'm only supposed to bf her a few times/day.

Before bed she had a lot of trouble latching... she would latch on then pop off immediately, scream, flail at me, grab at my necklace, hit my face, etc. After about 5 min though I could get her on and then she was okay.

But now she just woke up and I could NOT get her latched on. I tried for about 10 min and she just refused. She was clearly hungry and seemed frantically to want the boob. But it was in her mouth and she was still wailing. Couldn't get her latched at all. My husband ended up having to give her formula while I am downstairs pumping.

What the hell? Like this was supposed to make things BETTER. Not worse. And I'm so frustrated because I'm worried we just put her through this, and we spent all this money on it, and it just made everything worse.

Has anyone else had this happen post clipping? I am going to keep offering boob every session and hope she gets over it, but I"m worried :(

(LO is 5 weeks)
