Chicken and dumplings in these parts is rolled Bisquick and no veggies. But I actually don't like it, and though I've never had the Northern/Midwestern dropped dumplings, it looks like I'd prefer it.

I grew up with my momma making Bisquick dumplins. I don't like them though. I love dumplins made from biscuits though so that's how I do it. I know a lot of people use biscuits around here just because its fast and easy. I live in NC. Oh, and no veggies.

I think chicken and dumplings are grooosssssss!!! I just can't get on board.

The couple of times that DH's grandma has made it, it's like chicken stew (no veggies!) with doughy balls.

My mother makes them, she learned from her mom who was from NC.

Chicken and loads of carrots, celery, onions ans potatos. The broth is starchy. She then drops in quartered pillsbury biscuits. I'm sure my grandma didn't take the biscuit shortcut though.

ETA: my mom was raised in PA. After reading all the comments maybe that's why hers has veggies.

I grew up with my family doing biscuits dropped in (northern style I guess) and I always thought I didn't like dumplings. Then I met my IL's and she made southern style (like a noodle) and they are SOO good. Its the one thing I have asked my MIL to make for me when I'm sick!

Arizona, so we don't really have a traditional recipe. I really like Cracker Barrel's recipe- especially since I love their okra too.

If I'm making it at home I use Smitten Kitchen's recipe: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/12/chicken-and-dumplings/

It is a super simple dumpling recipe, but it tastes so good that I lick the mixing bowl!

I'm from MS originally and we always did bisquick dumplings dropped in. And absolutely no vegetables or cream of chicken soup or any of that. MIL is a Yankee and makes hers with lots of veggies and uses cream of chicken soup in it somehow.

I prefer drop dumplings, but grew up with rolled out homemade dumplings (in AL). No veggies... That would essentially be chicken pot pie. Gross.

My southern-roots family does the bisquick (or homemade) rolled and cut into squares; nothing else. Veggies in chicken and dumpling is blasphemy.

I don't have a set recipe, I just kind of...improv it, but I was reading through the comments section of the Pioneer Woman's Chicken and Dumplings and I swear some of the Southern commenters were about to start a dumpling war!

Ree's dumplings were dropped in and made of a mix of cornmeal and flour (mine are similar, actually!), but when I lived in the south the dumplings I had were made of Bisquick rolled out and cut into rectangles (like thick pasta). And there were no vegetables in it!

So some of the ladies saying Ree's is just a chicken soup with dumplings made me snicker my agreement, because it's definitely NOT what I grew up eating...but I like her style better ;)

What do you consider chicken and dumplings? (And what region do you live in?)

http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/12/chicken-and-dumplings/
