@MerryC: Wow! That is a great price to rent a pump! I think our hospital charged $60 per month plus you bought your own tubes, etc (so another $20 or so). I figured if I used it for even two months, its worth it to just buy a pump!

i say, register for it! if someone buys it for you, great! if not, i think it's a great investment. most of those registries offer 20% off certain pumps and 10% completion. i would def leave it sealed until i know for sure that breastfeeding works out for you though.

by any chance, is there a close friend/family who you can borrow one from?

@mrstilly: fwiw,my medela lactina is designed for multiple users....but i think its mostly available as a rental vs a purchased item. Its the same pump they provided for me to use during my hospital stay.

I rented my pump through my insurance, and they actually delivered it to my house the afternoon we came home from the hospital. Rental is about 40 bucks for 3 months which I only pay 20% of, so really cheap. And its a medela lactina, so a hospital grade pump with the new tubing, etc.

While im not using it a ton right now since im breastfeeding twins, it was sooo nice to use in the first weeks to build my supply, and for my tiny sleepy daughter who sometimes needed a bottle to get enough.

I would put it on the registry and see if someone buys it. If not, you can decide then to buy it or not. Leaving it sealed is a good idea, because then you can return it if things don't work out. I bought my pump before DS was born, but I didn't need it until he was about 10 weeks old. The hospital gave me a manual pump to use in the hospital, and that is all I used for the first 2 months, and by then I knew that breastfeeding was going to work out, and started using my electric pump to get prepared to go back to work.

Also, I'd advice against buying used, unless the pump is a closed system pump. Medela only makes open system pumps, which means that breastmilk can get into the pump itself, and if used by more than one person, can transmit diseases between uses and babies. Medela pumps clearly state they are only meant for one user. Hygeia and Ameda both make closed system pumps, which are advertised for use by more than one person with the purchase of a new parts kit.

I did just in case someone wanted to purchase it, however I have a friend who was unable to breastfeed who wants to give me hers, so I will do that if not and buy the new tubbing, ect. for it. It's only 3 months old and used for maybe 3 weeks if that.

@ladyfingers: Basically I made a registry with a different name and earlier due date. It started because I wanted a "secret" list but in the end it was nice because I got the completion code for that registry about 2 months before I was due.

I bought a pump myself because I waited for a 20% off sale and used a 10% fake registry completion code.

However, I did not open the box until I needed the pump. We didn't take it to the hospital or anything. If something happened and BFing didn't work out, I could have returned the pump or sold it on CL to someone like @JHoller25 who would have made a killing on it!

I bought a nice medela freestyle off of craigslist for $180. The lady had extra parts included and when I priced it out, the value was $400+, so definitely check online! I'll clean/sterilize most of it, and just buy new nipples.

There are new provisions that went into effect Aug 1 with the Affordable Care Act that include breastpumps. I am holding off on buying until my insurance figures out what they are covering. I think they are supposed to cover a rental at the very least. The caveat is that even tho the law started already your insurer only has to start covering at the start of your next plan year. For me, that's Jan 1.

My pump got bought a few days after my baby shower invites went out! Apparently people think it is a very smart move to buy an expecting mother a 280.00 pump!
I am grateful....I'd say register for it!

FWIW, I found a brand new Medela on craigslist for almost half the price. Some people get extra stuff from showers or whatever, and would rather have the cash over the store credit (that was the case for this lady I got it from!), so check CL out for that!

Also, on the BBB coupons, usually everything that I want is excluded in the very long list of exclusions that are listed, but I know Medela is not excluded, and I didn't see any other pump brands on there either! 20% off ends up being a lot on a larger purchase like that!

I didn't for a couple reasons...a friend's insurance covered the cost of a pump, another friend's doctor wrote her a prescription for a pump so she didn't have to buy one, and i have another friend who with her last two kids her milk never even came in (weird, i know). i'm just going to wait it out and see what happens.

You can tell I'm starting my registry from all my recent posts, huh? :)

On the one hand, I've though about renting a hospital pump for the first month or so. On the other, I've thought about just putting the pump on the registry to see if anybody will actually buy it. It would be nice to not have to fork over $250+ in the event that it works out. But if it doesn't work out, I would hate to have this pump laying around where that gift could have been used on a few things that we might have actually used. Although I guess, it's six of one, half a dozen of another -- either we would have to spend the $250 ourselves on a pump, or the $250 ourselves on whatever doesn't get purchased in favor of the pump ;)

What are your thoughts/experiences on registering for a pump? I supposed we could also put it on and if it does get purchased, leave it sealed and rent a hospital pump and if bf'ing doesn't work out, return it. ...
