When I put mine together, I went ahead and registered for anything I thought would be good for the first year. I figure with us being due in December, that covers all the big gifting occasions until they're 1 anyway! At my shower, I mainly got newborn things, except the jumperoo, but there's still my office shower and Christmas (and the completion discount!) so we'll see. I have room to store things though.

@MrsCastro: oooh, that Kiinde Twist system looks really neat. The biggest downside to it that I can see is that the bags cost significantly more than a typical system. I got a 60 count of Lansinoh bags at Target for something like $10. And this system is 40 for $18. But I love the idea of having it all-contained (I'm already getting tired of washing pump parts, and I haven't even gone back to work yet!). Hmm...

Anyway, to your original question, my LO doesn't seem at all bothered by different nipples. We got a bunch of different bottles but I made the mistake of getting wide mouth ones, so none of them can attach directly to my Medela pump. I imagine we'll use them more when we go back to work and DH is transferring milk from bags instead of popping a nipple onto a refrigerated bottle.

She uses soothies pacis, but has also used playtex ortho. A friend gave us some pacifier keepers (this: http://www.amazon.com/MAM-Pack-Trends-Pacifier-Colors/dp/B003I85VBO/) so I just undid the velcro end, tossed the ring, and fished it through one of the holes in the soothie.

We also broke all the rules and introduced nipples right away (pacifier initially, and then the bottle). I'm still breastfeeding and it doesn't seem to have affected her. I'm not sure if I would recommend it as every baby is different, but it worked for us and saved me from becoming a human pacifier.

I like te logic of start with the cheapest bottles first. If they work, great! If not, then try more expensive ones.

1. We tried a bunch of different types of bottles and ended up using the Comotomo ones and sometimes Tommee Tippee (but the caps on those drove me crazy since they were hard to get off... maybe it's just me). I think all babies are different so maybe just get a few different ones to try.

2. I wish I had thought to register for more things past the newborn stage so I think go for it!

For pacifiers we use the soothies and the mam ones. He doesn't really like them that much though. Maybe just get a few different ones to try.

I think nipple confusion is a myth. Best bet? Introduce a bottle as soon as you can. We did this, as did a lot of my friends, and none of our LO's ever suffered from "confusion".

That being said, we use Dr. Browns and they are the only bottle my son will take.

1) We were told to register for at least 3 types of bottles and see what LO likes. Probably smart to try to get a few of each. Check for sales too... I got a 3 pack of small Tomee Tippee Bottles at Target on sale for like $6!

2) I say anything in the first year is fine. You'll eventually need it!

3) No idea on paci's, we just have a variety of types ready for her to try. I figure it's same as bottles- LO preference.

We only use bottles occasionally and she likes the Tommy Tippee ones. We really didn't experiment- I got some as a gift as happened to have sterilized them already when we gave her her first bottle! The medela regular ones were way too fast for her. I hear good things about the playtex drop ins and would use those if we were bottle feeding a lot.

I would def register for stuff for later on if you have the space to store it. We don't so I only registered for the early stuff but ill have to buy the other stuff myself.

My Lo just hates pacis. We've tried nuk, mam, and soothies and she spits them all out. But I think having I e of each on hand is good so you can see what she likes. I didn't have any mam so I became fixated that those would be the one brand she likes. Sadly no, just my nipple.

It IS a lit harder than a wedding registry. With that, you already know what kitchen or house stuff you use. You have no idea what babies even like in general much less what YOUR baby will like. Just accept that some things will go unused and you'll have I run out and buy other stuff after baby is here :)

We loved Comotomo bottles. They are vented to reduce colic, but have only 4 parts, so they are very easy to clean and assemble.

We used soothies pacis and had no issues.

You might not want to get a whole bunch of bottles or pacis until you know what works for LO. If you are EBF, you won't need many bottles initially anyway (unless you supplement or exclusively pump).

For bottles maybe consider registering for 1 of 2-3 different types and a full set of one type. Keep the set in the packaging and just plan to exchange it for whatever set works after you try the individual ones. (Better yet consider borrowing a bottle or two from a friend before opening a set.)

Definitely register for stuff that you will use later. A lot of people forget to think about stuff for starting solids and the cost of different bibs, forks/spoons, sippy cups and dishes can really add up!

1. We registered for Dr. Brown bottles, and we're really happy with them. DD was combo fed and had absolutely no problem switching between the Dr. Browns and the breast. I've also heard excellent things about ComoTomo bottles.

2. I think it's totally fine to register for things your baby will use, in the future. I will say that most of our guests wanted to get items that DD would use right away, but I did get some nice spoons, cups, bowls for when we start solids.

3. My daughter does not prefer those pacifiers - she seems to have difficulty grasping them in mouth, and they are *way* too huge for her face. We swear by the NUK brand.

DD is EBF and we use Tommee Tippee bottles. I initially registered for them because they are SO CUTE (great reason, right?) but they're great and she has never had an issue with them. You can get TT adapters for your pump, too, so that you can pump directly into the bottles (I registerd for these adapters, too).

You may want to hold off on pacis. Every kid is so different and they're pretty cheap if you have to buy them. DD will only take soothies, and even then it's hit or miss. We have also offered MAM pacis and she absolutely hates them.

1. Our infant class nurses recommended Dr. Brown's to reduce/avoid colic, and the Playtex bottles with the liner so that you can pump milk directly into the disposable liners.

2. Sure, baby will use it eventually.

3. The nurses also said get a variety of pacifiers, if you choose to use them, because some babies are selective and you just can't predict. But they also said pacifiers are supposed to be replaced often so it can't hurt to have several.
