I'd pull out a baby portion before I added chili pepper, but that's about it. I hardly as salt to our food and we don't eat much processed food.

I never worried, though I cook most of our food, so it's already lower in sodium than most. I also made sure to feed her spices early and often - I don't believe anyone likes bland food. She's really adventurous with flavors now, so I feel like it worked out.

@Meridian: Spices/seasonings are fine, as long as we're not talking about MSG! Our OT actually recommended using more spices to help DS chew/swallow instead of stuffing his mouth full of food. Turns out he loves spicy food already.

I would generally take out a portion for DD before adding salt to the rest of the dish, but when that wasn't practical I didn't really sweat it...I do put some salt in our food but not very much, and before she was 1 she pretty much just played with finger foods and ingested purées (which I didn't add any salt to anyway).

My kid loves spices, always has. We didn't really start table foods until 10 months because he just wasn't interested. Then when we did I tried bland foods and he hated them. When I started giving food to him exactly how DH and I like it he started eating it. I don't cook with a lot of salt and we don't eat a lot of processed foods. Now at 3, his favorite meal is a spicy jambalaya that I make!

She's eaten what we have since 6.5 months. It's forced us to eat healthier. I do still give her baby/toddler snacks because they have less sugar. I'm trying to get away from processed snacks, but they're so easy!

@Meridian: seasonings are fine! It's just that sodium needs to be limited for tiny developing kidneys. If it's possible to add soy sauce last, then cook the food, remove a portion for the baby, then stir in the sauce.

Interesting! I didn't realize babies are able to start eating "adult" food so early! We cook with a lot of soy sauce and lots of seasonings (probably way too much), so I'm not sure how this will work... LO is almost 5 months, so I need to start thinking about this soon.

We served regular food...mostly just didn't add salt to recipes that called for it. Some other things...if my husband wanted chocolate chip pancakes, I'd separate some batter and put blueberries in the ones for my daughter instead. When we ordered Chinese food I'd rinse sauce off of pieces before giving it to her. We use jarred pasta sauce so I would give her pasta without sauce.

We stopped putting salt in the food we cooked, but we're not huge salt people so it doesn't bother us. Our pediatrician was not concerned about salt though - once DS was 9 months or so, she said he could eat anything (except honey, of course).

It really caused us to revamp our diet !

We used to eat the pre seasoned rice. But they are loaded with sodium. Now we just use plain rice and season ourself.

Since 6 months, DD got whatever we ate. I wasn't overly concerned with salt, we don't eat a lot of processed things so it wasn't a huge concern.

We literally just gave DS whatever we ate. I definitely tried to give him parts of our food that wasn't heavily seasoned (like the middle of the meat) or ordered something that was a little less salty.

I guess I don't worry about this because we don't use salt, and when we do it's at the table. If a dish calls for soy sauce I might tone it down or just rinse the pieces.

@BabyTsMom: we just add the salt to the food on our plate. We season with everything but hot things (pepper, chilly etc.) and salt and add these to our serving but not LOs.

LO ate what we did pretty consistently from 8-9 months on. I don't cook with salt (or very little) and I just was more aware of the amount of sodium that was in stuff I cooked once she started to eat, it helped us regulate our intake as well.

I just give exactly what we eat. Of course some things I couldn't until they got older and more teeth (like steak). Or I would purée it a bit so that it was easier to chew. I never worried about the spices. I guess I just figured they wouldn't want to eat bland food either.

For the most part T eats what we eat, and has since 8 or 9 months consistently. If something is too spicy or too tough for him to chew then I'll give him something else in its place. That usually doesn't happen though. When I think about what to make for meals I just make sure I make something for all of us that T can eat too.

Yes, I would just pull food out for LO before I put seasonings in. For example at 9.5m a meal she could have would be chicken breasts, roasted sweet potatoes and broccoli. For the most part we cook with very little salt so I wouldn't be too concerned either.

I hear/read lots of parents saying their LOs eat what they eat. Does this apply to younger kids, less than 1 year? I would love to do this as well, but Im always reading about making sure their food doesn't have a lot of salt in it. I just assumed that our food is too salty?
Do you make food specifically for your LO that is more bland, or do you just feed them what you're having? But maybe water it down with something bland like pasta, rice, or bread?
My LO is 9.5 months and I want to start giving him more variety but it's stressful having to come up with different things every day!!
