He does seem to be in pain, it's not just fussiness so I feel like I shouldn't let him suffer from it. I may bing him to the pedi tomorrow just to rule out anything else!

@SleepyMonkey: ugh seriously!! One thing after another. @loveisstrange: I hate teeth. Seriously, we should just forget about baby teeth and do pediatric dentures.

Our ped told us that as long as we are not exceeding the recommended dosages, we are fine.

Im okay with 1-2 times a day. We have 2 year molars coming in in our house, so we've been giving it lately too. :/

When L had an ear infection our pedi old us that ibuprofen and acetaminophen are great because they work well and you can use them for a.long time with no side effects. I'd be okay with 1x per day for a week. I hope he gets better soon! Croup, cold, teeth! Poor L.

@hilsy85: Aww, I'm sorry L hasn't been feeling well. We had a week or so when we were giving J Motrin every night - first he was teething, then it turned into an ear infection. The doctor was completely unconcerned about the Motrin use (I asked if it was okay to keep giving it to him, and he said yes, and you should, because an ear infection is painful!). Even though it looks like L doesn't have an ear infection, the doctors made me feel better about the Motrin use.

@hilsy85: The first time my son had an ear infection, I didn't know what I was looking for either. I was dosing him with advil for 4 days, thinking I was helping the fever, so imagine my surprise when I finally took him in. I really felt terrible about the whole situation. Now I bring him in immediately at the first sign of a fever following a cold.

The good news is that an ear infection is something that the doc can see right away, so if you've already been to urgent care, then I'd feel reasonably comfortable it's not an ear infection.

@hilsy85: I would have no problem using Motrin 1x a day if it made LO feel that much better! You could call your Ped just to be sure, but if it makes your LO comfortable/uncranky and you are only doing it 1x a day until the cold/tooth passes, I think that should be fine. It's not like you are doing it around the clock, and I don't think 7 days is too long. Maybe just call and ask though, just to be safe!

@looch: we took him to urgent care on thursday to check for an ear infection and the doctor didn't see anything...I guess if it keeps up for another day, I'll maybe try to bring him in tomorrow to the pedi just in case. He's never had an ear infection so I guess I don't really know what to look for.

ETA I also don't think he's feeling bad bc of his cold now, my guess is teething? but maybe something else is going on.

@locavore_mama: well I think the directions are for if like the fever doesn't respond to the motrin (which it always did, and at this point he doesn't have a fever...).

I think I had asked about it previously when he was teething/sick, and they seemed pretty relaxed about using it once a day for a week or so. I guess I could call again and ask. I just really don't know what else to do! It's one thing if he's just whiny and fussy, but another if he's screaming and crying :(

Isn't there a direction on the box if using for more than X continuous days to contact the pediatrician?

Honestly I would be uncomfortable using it for 7 straight days. But it is hard when they are in obvious discomfort. I would refer to his Ped at this point.

LO came down with croup last week and had a fever for about 3 days, so he was getting motrin pretty much every 6 hours. Since then, it turned into the cold from hell, so he has been insanely cranky and unhappy unless we give him motrin. I am usually really not ok with regular motrin dosing for more than a few days unless there's a fever, but the difference between LO on motrin and off is insane--he goes from screaming and crying and only wanting to be held and walked around to running around and playing after the motrin kicks in. I think he is pretty much over his cold now, but I think he has top teeth coming in--I figure he must be in pain from something if the motrin has such an effect on his mood?

Anyway, how long would you feel comfortable using motrin for (like a 1x daily dose)? If I give it to him today that would be 7 days in a row he's had at least one dose...any other suggestions for making him more comfortable? :(
