I just wanted to add that we chose Gentlease for our own convenience/comfort! Every bottle of Similac Advance she took, she spit up. She wasn't in any pain, and it wasn't projectile. She could've very well stayed on that formula and been fine, but as first time parents & her losing a good amount of weight after birth, we weren't comfortable with her spitting up at every feeding. She hasn't spit up at all with Gentlease, and she's peeing/pooping/burping/tooting awesome. I really think the partially broken down proteins make a big difference for our girl.

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm so glad you said that. I was thinking it, but didn't know if it was appropriate to say. I agree with you completely though. Is bloody poop the only reason to switch?

Ooh, also insurance surely won't cover it if you start with it, but there is a chance with a demonstrated intolerance that hydrolyzed formula will be covered!

@Mrs. Polish: start with regular. By the sound of things, there's a lot else going on that could have contributed to fussy babies. And who knows the babe could be milk/soy intolerant just like sibs, but at $200/ month, it's much easier to find out the hard way than to shell out for expensive formula needlessly!

@Mrs. Jacks: that makes so much sense about there being so many. Our birth mom has said that all of her children have required Nutramigen, and she gave me a can of it. Do I start with a regular and switch if it isn't working?

@Mrs. Polish: there is a lot of marketing out there and while they are not all the same (ingredients vary), they have been studied and there's no real truth to the claims that one is better than another.

In my line of work, one of our big pet peeves is formulas switching, because that often ends babies on expensive elemental formulas who don't need it... So I'd say pick whatever you are going to pick and stick to it unless the baby somehow develops a milk protein intolerance (you'll know by the bloody poop!). We ultimately decided that organic was most important to us, so we went with Earth's Best... But even with organic formulas, you'll hear people worrying about hexane extraction and sucrose.

It gets pretty ugly in the formula weeds, and ultimately I don't think it's going to make a big difference.

I tell parents the same thing about formula that I say about cough medicines. If one had a real advantage over he others, it would be the only one or two. (think Ergo or Nose Frida) The fact that there are 20 tells me that this is not true!

I think some of the non-gentle formulas have some desirable things like DHA. We've tried several different formulas since we had samples, and the one we like the best is Enfamil Gentlease. We tried some regular Enfamil and even the Similac Advanced, but the Gentlease is the only thing she's eaten that hasn't been spit up at all. All babies are different, but I've heard great things about Gentlease and it works really well for us, so I'd recommend it!

We've used Gerber Gentle from the beginning. It was the first one we tried and she did really well on it.

Last night at the store I was noticing that the gentle formula costs the same as the regular formula. Is there a reason why one would use the regular if gentle is the same price? I guess I don't understand why all formula isn't gentle.
