:( so sorry you are going through this. It's tough, no doubt. I just wanted to chime in about shedding-- I have two small highly shedding dogs and using a deshedding comb has helped immensely! During high shedding seasons I'll do a deshed followed immediately by bath once a month or so.

The peeing situation sounds really challenging. I'd hire a trainer for that. They can probably help with the barking also.

The walker idea is good. They need a lot of exercise. I'm able to exercise my lab most days, but I still try to send her to doggie day camp once a week to burn off some serious energy and socialize. She's an angel when she's tired.

That's such a tough call...I agree with all the previous suggestions. When did the Yorkie start peeing indoors? My Yorkie has a tendency to believe she is "above" peeing outside sometimes.

What about having a walker come to take everyone out on a nice long midday walk so all are tired for the rest of the day and you get a break? They're not expensive, at least where we live ($15 per walk)...

I'm sorry your going through that, such a tough situation.

I think the next best step would be a short hair cut, and not feeling bad about the crate. Because he goes into it on his own will to nap shows its like his little den and he is happy there.

I also think as PP said, maybe those diapers would help with the marking?

If your dog willingly goes in her crate when you're home, do not feel guilty for putting her in there when you're out. It is her safe space. When I first met my husband, his dog would ruin anything she could if we were out-she even ate the linoleum floor one time. I started crate training her and now when we put our shoes on she goes in her crate without being asked. She even sleeps in it at night voluntarily. They really do like the security a crate provides. For our dog, I think she knows when she goes in there, then we are for sure coming home rather than being anxious that we abandoned her.

Totally do the crate longer! Our dog can be a pain in the ass when company is over and he chews things when we leave. He willingly goes into his crate and has a snooze! Lots of people crate their dogs while they work, so a few hours at a time shouldn't be a big deal.

Hugs. I feel you on this big time.

Would it be an option to build some sort of enclosed run outside for your dogs? We have a 40kg staffy / boxer and we used to have a fenced enclosure about 2m x 2m (included his kennel) and he was happy as a clam to hang out in it while we were at work all day. These days he overnights in a "cage" that attaches to his kennel (I think it's 2 metres long?) and he recognises it as his den.

My other thought is some sort of doggy daycare or more exercise to work off some energy? Or could you leave the dogs in your garage?

I'm sorry you're having trouble and I hope you can work something out!

@blackbird: I actually was looking into getting the Golden groomed... they quoted me $65, and I was like UGGGGHHH. It already costs $100 every other month to get the Yorkies groomed... gaaaah. I even considered cutting our Golden's hair myself, but she's so crazy and would flip out if I got near her w/scissors. But yeah, I think grooming might be an option... it's just that their haircuts cost more than my own... :T

Thank you, everyone.

@78h2o: You know, she spends quite a bit of time in her crate even when we are home (just goes in there willingly, with the crate door open), so maybe she doesn't mind it as much as I think she does. I think it's b/c *I* get claustrophobic so easily, that I project that onto the dog.

@Mamasig: It's such a tough decision to make. I'm glad you were able to find a great home for your dog. 4 dogs is a lot!! That must have been really hard.

@pinkcupcake: could you gate your Golden into a bathroom when you are out? Otherwise, I think it is fine to leave a dog in a crate when you are out, even if it for a large portion of the day. We have a little dog and I work three days a week. We usually keep her crated when we're gone. She doesn't seem to mind it, she usually sleeps and I think She is less stressed about looking out the windows/protecting the house.

I also recommend a furminator and short hair cut.

When DH and I got married we had 4 dogs - 2 each. So much work! After DS1 was born we ended up giving away one of them. She was getting snappy and aggressive towards the other dogs. I think because she wasn't getting as much attention. I couldn't have that with kids. I never thought I'd be that person who gave her dogs away after kids. But I am. Life and priorities change. I had to do what was best for all of us. My energy now goes toward my boys and not the dogs. It's just how it is.

I asked my vet's office and they knew of someone who was looking for a 2nd dog. Actually that person had a dog from the same litter. It worked out but we were sad about it.

For me, the behavior was what tipped us towards giving her away. The extra work was a pain but I felt like I had to deal with it.

@pinkcupcake: I'm sorry. Maybe she's destroying stuff because she is in her crate? Our basset LOVES his crate and needs it to feel safe when we aren't home.

If you do end up rehoming, I would find comfort in the fact that they are purebred and that there are rescues who can help you.

@pinkcupcake: I'm sorry you haven't been able to find a medical solution for your yorkie marking. That would drive me absolutely insane as well.

Others will probably be able to weigh in more but there's absolutely nothing wrong with leaving your dog in the crate for several hours. That's what crate training is :). My parents have crate trained all their dogs and they would stay in the crate during the workday and at nighttime.

If you have the financial means, I would say to try a trainer or even pet therapist/psychologist.

Aside from that, rehoming could be an option. I've seen it work for others. Sometimes animals just cannot handle changes in life and they're better off in a quiet/child free home.

Did any of them come from a shelter that has a return policy? For example, my older cat is from an ASPCA and we signed a contract that they agree to take her back for life.

@hotchildinthecity: Yes, she's spayed. We've tried everything... taken her to numerous vets, tried so many meds, anxiety meds, etc, etc. Nothing has worked. :( If it's there, she marks it.

As for crating her longer... I guess it's b/c I feel bad leaving her in a crate for longer than that. I get so stressed when I'm out and she's in her crate... like I need to hurry back b/c she must be feeling so stuck inside :(

Just some questions off the top of my head:

-have you ruled out a medical problem with your yorkie? Is she spayed?

- is there a reason you cant leave the lab in the crate for longer than an hour?

-have you tried furminator with your lab? It works wonders on my cats.

Ugh, can't believe I'm writing this...

I am having a really hard time w/my dogs (I have 2 Yorkies, ages 6 and 11, and a 4-year-old Golden Retriever).

My 6-yo Yorkie pees and marks EVERYTHING. I can't leave anything on the floor for more than 10 minutes without her walking by and peeing it on. It drives me crazy, especially since with a toddler, there are toys, books, etc all over the place. I feel like I spend my entire day cleaning up pee and picking everything up off the floor... which is impossible with my LO.

Our Golden is so sweet. But she's a handful :( She sheds like crazy. I have to clean the floors everyday if we don't want to breathe in fur all day long. We can't leave her outside when we go anywhere b/c she barks and the neighbors complain. We crate her for short periods of time, but not if we're gonna be gone for longer than an hour - then we leave her in the house and without fail, she destroys SOMETHING. I noticed today she's been jumping on the leather couch - there are huge scratches everywhere.

We have an open concept home so there isn't a place to safely gate her in.

This is really stressing me out. I swore I would never be that person who rehomed her pets after having a kid. But I really feel like I'm at my end. I'm so snappy and irritable. I hate the extra work. I feel so miserable, but I don't know how to get over this guilt. I feel like I'm abandoning them, like I'm giving up.

I just don't know what to do.
