What about looking into some help from the neighborhood? Maybe put some flyers up asking if there are any school aged or teenaged kids in your area who want to pick up an extra few bucks? I walked dogs in my 'hood after school all through high school and charge basically nothing - my dad never let us have dogs so it was a pleasure for me to do. I think I charged $5/dog/day but less for the cute ones :) Also I did occasionally wash dogs for people, or do a whole weekend care thing once I was old enough to housesit their places.

Has the boy dog always had an issue with not using the pee pads properly? Maybe he is having a rough time being locked in a utility room for 19 hours a day (since he hasn't figured out the doggy door), so he's having bathroom issues.

I wouldn't just rehome one. It's either both or suck it up and work through it.

@spaniellove: They are tiny dogs. They do use pee pads but the boy dog pees off it every time (like half on half off) and he pees up the door frame and the washing machine too. The girl dog uses them fine. She also uses the doggie door whereas he just doesn't get it!!

Thanks for the advice everyone. We did look into hiring a dog walker but they charge so much over here and just pop in for a 20 min walk.Earlier today, I left the house for a few minutes and the boy dog peed in the utility room (I had been working from home today). Besides, we just can't afford it. There isnt a daycare facility near here at all, even if we could afford it. We do get them groomed every 6 weeks or so but the little boy dog pees on his tummy so he stinks within days of the groom.

You're right everyone. I can't just keep one. Its just that he is the problem. Ugh.

How big is the bigger one? Could they be trained to use pee pads? Our dog has always used pee pads and it has been especially useful now that we have less time for her with LO here...she's become pretty self-sufficient. I know a groomer can be an extra expense but they can do such a good job with a dog's coat that kept indoors their hair should look good longer than if you washed them and they shouldn't stink.

Oh this must be heartbreaking! I think it would be hard for the one dog to be alone all day :(

When we had LO our dogs lifestyle certainly changed as well. But we utilize a lot of the resources pp names above (daycare 1-2x/wk), groomer every 4 wk.

Can your dh help with dog care?? My DH and I try and split duties so that it just doesn't fall on one of us! He walks him in the am and I usually take him after lo goes to bed. Even just getting out for 20 minutes is good for both of us!

I think keeping one and rehoming the other would be very hard on the dog that you keep. She would go from being left in a utility room all of the time with company, to being left in a room all of the time alone :/ That doesn't seem like an improvement. I agree with the previous posters; I personally would hire a dog walker and keep up with grooming on a regular basis. If that really isn't an option, I'd try to rehome them together.

Like PP, I'd recommend considering what dog services (walker, doggie daycamp, groomer) can do for the situation.

I work from home, so loneliness isn't an issue for our dog. However, I can't provide much exercise and dog-to-dog socialization time right now. So we take her to doggie daycamp two days a week (some will pick your dog up from home if you need). She gets lots of exercise there and gets to play with other dogs, which she loves. Then she's an angel at home because she's tired!

Some groomers let the dogs play and socialize all day before or after their grooming, so some people kill two birds with one stone there...

I hope you are able to figure out a solution that works.

@Mrs. Jacks: I agree, maybe you could hire someone to come in once a day just to walk them for 20 minutes or so? That might eliminate the problem of them going to the bathroom inside. I don't know if there's a comparable site in the UK but there's a popular website here in the US where you can post an ad looking for a dog walker and usually get someone who works part-time or is just looking for a little extra cash who will walk the dog for a nominal fee. And yeah, maybe have regular grooming appts? Maybe bi-weekly on the weekends?

If they are a bonded pair, I think it will be hard to separate them. The one you have left might end up causing more problems for you while you are gone during the day because she's lonely.

Let me ask this... Will this be a permanent solution to a temporary problem or do you think the circumstances you are currently facing will never resolve? In other words, as your daughter matures, will you have more time for the dogs? Could you hire to eliminate the problem? We were going to hire a dog Walker for our new puppy, but when I mentioned this to our retired next door neighbor, she demanded to be able to care for the puppy. The type of puppy we got is frequently called a "comforter spaniel" (cavalier) and so he's as therapeutic for her as she is to him.

With our Berner, we always dropped him off at the groomer on Fridays so we'd have a fresh dog for the weekend.

If something has got to give, then it's got to give, but I'm just trying to think of solutions that might be a win-win for all involved.

 How close are they to each other? I think it is feasible to re-home just one as long as they're not incredibly attached to each other and would do fine emotionally when separated. If they seem dependent on each other, though, it might be tough on both of them to have just one re-homed and you could re-home them both with the stipulation that they must be adopted together. I think really the decision is dependent on how attached they are...

I can't believe I'm even writing this....... but we are considering rehoming our dogs.

I just don't have the time to devote to them now we have a LO. They are rarely walked. I just don't have time in the mornings now (daycare drop off then a 25 mile commute) and I barely have the energy after E is in bed. If we take E to the park at weekends, we usually leave the dogs home because you can't take dogs into the children's playground bit..... They STINK. They haven't been bathed in weeks because it takes so long to bath then blow dry two fluffy dogs. They basically live in our utility room 19 hrs per day and, despite having a doggy door into an outdoor run, they have taken to peeing and pooping indoors. I can't blame them - they're never walked! - but I'm so over the smell.

We've looked into rehoming and we know what we need to do...... but....... I can't let my little girl dog go. I've had her the longest and she's pretty old now. She's my baby. We only got the other dog as company for her because I had to work from the office more and we didn't want her to be alone. She needs way less exercise (and I could tuck her under my arm at the playground!)..... and perhaps if I only had one dog to bath I could fit it in??

Would it be really cruel to rehome one and keep the other? Is it mean to leave her home alone all day? Should I rehome them as a pair?
