@runsyellowlites: I learned everything on my own as well. The pediatricians still don't believe that my son has any problems (at this point only to soy so we are good). And I live in a teeny town with few doctor options. I personally didn't touch peanuts with a 10 foot pole because of the seriousness of peanut allergies. We have none in our house and eat Sunbutter (yummy) because of my friend's kid.

Yes that is another option! We did atopy patch testing (APT) with an allergist but it is similar to what @brownie: stated where the food is placed on the child's skin (back), covered with a small disk and removed after 48 hours. The results are read 24 hours after the disk/food was removed and you look for redness, raised bumps, blistering etc.

This is another tool that has been great for some, but others don't seem to react this way. Could be a way to "pre-screen" so to speak before you try in your milk! It was really helpful for us in the end. The pass/fail rate is not 100% understood, but we took all positive reactions as such and processed with caution on the negatives.

There is some info online about doing a DIY version yourself.

@brownie: Guess I could try her skin. There isn't really any reason to believe she'd be allergic, it still makes me nervous with the intolerance issues she had. We currently don't have a pedi so waiting for that could be awhile. :/

@anbanan15: That's really interesting! Sorry your lo deals with all that though :(.

Our medical community here is stupid... I'm just glad it wasn't something more serious for P!

I have two friends with kids with peanut allergies. If they had to do it over again, they said they would do two things. 1) do it in the pediatricians office. 2) put peanut butter on their skin to see if they react to it that way first.

I know that intolerances are different and often don't affect skin. BUT peanuts are such a crazy allergy it may be a way to start.

@runsyellowlites: It is super long for us because of the FPIES. FPIES is believed to be at least, in-part, T-cell mediated and normal T-cell die off is ~18 mo...so we wait. We get more help from allergy than GI, but they do work together along with our pedi and dietician.

ETA: and trust me the reading and figuring out as much as you can yourself is a really huge part of our lives too. There is a lot still unknown about FPIES and a lot comes from support of other families living and dealing with these issues and not only from the few medical professionals that are up to date on it.

@anbanan15: That's what I was thinking! And wow that's a long time! P's pedi never even took me seriously on any of her intolerances so we didn't see a GI or speak about them specifically, I just read as much as I could & figured it out myself.

@runsyellowlites: I think through your milk is the best way to start. Small amounts and increase until you feel you had a "full serving" then if all is good you could try with P. This is how we always ran our food trials...me first then eventually direct ingestion for DS. Stinks if there is a fail and working the proteins our of your system, but safer, IMO, in the long run.

It always baffles me when LO's are reintroducing a new food already. We are not even eligible to even think about attempting a retrial until at least 18 mo past exposure (via breastmilk or direct ingestion) for anyone of DS's foods no matter how mild or severe the reaction was. Feels like an eternity!

@Dandelion: I chickened out!

@LovelyPlum: I would think even directly it'll take around the same time for the protein to be out of our/her system... I'm just worried about a more severe reaction if I give it straight to her. :/

Clearly, I've never done this before, but on another post yesterday (maybe the MSPI one?), someone suggested feeding it directly to LO. That way, if there was a reaction, your milk would still be clean.

Good luck!

Did you try it, yet? How did it go?

I only avoided peanut butter when I was nursing DS, because it made my milk smell gross to me, lol. I still avoid it to this day, just from that memory, lol

I think I'm ready to finally try & eat peanuts again! P had an intolerance reaction to them when she was a few months old (atleast I thought) and I cut them AND tree nuts from my diet. Well about a month ago P had some honey nut cheerios (organic kind) and did great so I know she's outgrown the almond issue.. I still hadn't tried peanuts again though b/c I felt so bad about her reaction (she gets a horrible acidic diaper rash & tummy ache), I was also kind of scared about an allergy reaction.

I SO miss peanut butter though so I think I may try a snack & see how she does.... I *think* me eating it would be better than her eating it right? It's the last thing for us to reintroduce so I'm nervous & excited.. Anyone else cut peanuts & then reintroduce them? How did it go?
