I read til I get sleepy. white noise also helps (I have the app on my phone).

One thing a client used to use was a God Box. You don't have to believe in God or anything, you can just use the idea. She would imagine a box (on a shelf, the floor, in a closet, etc) and really try to vividly imagine herself pulling the thought from her head, setting it into the box, and leaving it there for the night. She said she was putting it there for God to handle, but you could just tell yourself whatever works! Putting it there for the thoughts to sleep for the night, etc.

I'm a terrible insomniac! I lie there obsessing about things - like, for example, two nights ago I couldn't sleep because my husband had put some of DD's laundry in the tumble dryer and I feared that her cardigan was in among it. I couldn't rest until I got up to check (it wasn't btw).

Strange as it sounds, I found the white noise machine really relaxing when DD was in our room. The waves sound was very soothing. I might get one for our room once she is STTN consistently and I don't have to listen out for her anymore.

this sounds weird, but when i was pregnant i found these youtube videos by this massage therapist who has a very soothing voice. i listened to those because they helped relax me, and i still listen to her to my phone when i get into bed and it puts me out like a light. it's a very strong sleep cue for me now. wish i could use it on my LO!

A hot, hot, hot shower!!! Something about the pouring beads of hot water down my back is super soothing.

I have a friend who uses Ativan for her anxiety and insomnia, and it works like a charm, but that, like Ambien, is a serious drug.

I think (and obviously you know this) that ultimately you need to remove yourself from the thing that's making you stressed and anxious (the ILs!) but while that's not an easy fix, in the meantime I think having a set wind-down, bed time routine will help. Even just reading a book to get you out of your own life and into the story will help get your mind off the stresses of the day. Hugs

Do you have a semi-set routine before bed? DH likes to watch an episode of his favorite show, I like to play solitaire on my phone against my sister. Before that, I liked to read a little bit each night. Both activities helped direct my mind to something specific, not general worries, and I eventually got conditioned to getting sleepy when I started my activity each night. Hope you find some cozy sleep soon!

I avoid caffeine after 3 pm, I make sure I get some fresh air everyday and I purposely turn off the TV/radio/electronics about 2 hours before bedtime, it helps me to start shutting down my mind.

I sometimes have problems sleeping. I drink something warm. I have a white noise machine and I try to meditate. The meditation helps to push all the thoughts running through my head away. I just meditate while in bed or I'll use one of my meditation CDs that helped me sleep during pregnancy.

I try to avoid drugs, a hot bath/reading/or watching a show on the ipad in bed helps me get sleepy (or all 3.) If worse comes to worse I'll take a Unisom to help me get to sleep.

I've taken unisom and that has been pretty helpful in terms of falling asleep (probably too similar to the benadryl, though). Do you read before sleep? I find that reading helps me to relax my mind so that I can easily fall asleep at night. I've also heard that melatonin drops/pills can also be helpful for sleep.

i just realized there's a 'your sleep' board!

i can't seem to sleep anymore, i'm anxious in the evenings and by the time i get in bed, i have too much nervous energy. then, when i'm about to fall asleep, it's almost like one of those falling dreams, where you startle yourself awake in a panic, only there's no dream, it's just the act of almost falling asleep that brings it on, and the panic lingers after. there's not a specific fear i have, my subconscious just doesn't seem to want me to fall asleep. tonight, we may switch sides of the bed, so SO is closer to the door, i think that might make me feel better.

how do you relax in the evenings to help you sleep? (not interested in ambien, we have some but that stuff scares me! i have been taking benadryl & valerian root)
