No advice re: NY, but can help with the SAHM schedule to a 3 year old.

Would highly reco a playschool program a few mornings a week, that is a great way to meet people and build a community!

MY DS was in playschool 2 mornings/week last year and then right after school we'd go to the park. On the other 3 days:
-1 morning, grocery shopping.errands
-1 morning, "cultural day" (had a long list of museums/parks/seasonal events that we would cycle through, and I got to go to places I had never been, even living in my city for 30+ years)
-1 morning long playground trip/breakfast out.
Afternoon schedule was the same every day: nap, art proj/free play/playground, tv time, dinner, bath, bed.

YAY for upstate NY. I grew up there and loved it. Such a beautiful relaxing area. If you enjoy the outdoors and winter activities (skiing/snowmobiling/sledding/snowshoeing) it'll be awesome!!

@ocean81: I’ll be there to see you with bells on. Can’t wait to photograph your kiddos. @peaches1038: I’m a Libertarian currently in a conservative/farming community but I lived in the most liberal areas here too. Thanks for the info. I love Geneva so far.

I’m from the area and would be happy to answer any specific questions! Agree with the pp in that living in Geneva would be best if you are at all a Democrat/liberal. Upstate NY is very conservative and it is not uncommon to see confederate flags and the like

Hi! My sis-in-law is a teacher in Seneca Falls and her and her husband have made a really nice life for themselves. We stayed in Geneva and really liked it there. I also have family in Homer, friend in Syracuse and then more family in Watertown. Can talk any specifics but I am confident you will find a place that works great for you!

Editing to add we are in Albany!

@youboots: Geneva is super pretty(Seneca Lake is really nice) and has anenities despite being pretty far out there because of Hobart and Williams Smth which is a prestigious liberal arts college. Id love in Geneva if you could rather than any surrounding towns which can be kind of weird in the middle of NY.

@Ms. RV: they are doing the packing I think. So we have to purge before they come.

@youboots: Is the relocation company doing the packing for you? If not, you can sort when you pack. That is how we did it (for the most part). If they are packing for you (lucky you!) then let them pack up and move everything. Good luck! We chose to downsize to simplify our life and it has been so awesome (granted, we are only a month or two in!).

@Pollywog: thank you! I put space in between the a and m.
@Becky: We are most likely moving to Geneva. How do you like the area? We will be out of the snow belt.
@Ms. RV: our house is 3,000 sq feet. We will do our best but there is no way we can go through everything in two months. But I’m hoping to purge more on the other side. What you did sounds reasonable. I want to be good at itemizing donations.@bhbee: so many great tips. Thank you!!!@MenagerieMama: I think even an hour a day of purging will make a difference.@lamariniere: thank you so much. I am so excited! Our new area is beautiful.

We have moved cross country twice - actually are mid the second move! We used ABF relocubes each time and it was great - highly recommend it. Hired movers to load but did our own purging/packing.

We moved cross country on company relo four years ago. To a bigger place, but I still tried to purge like crazy. One area at a time over a few weeks. We were moving out of a city apartment and it was still a ton of donations and stuff to toss! They were packing for us, but they pretty much just throw stuff in so I organized a lot myself into bins or bags so it would be easier on the other end. So even if they’re paying for packing for you, it’s worth it to be organized.

They also unpacked but we were able to ask for them to just do 1-2 rooms (I think kitchen and nursery) - they just put things on whatever surface they can find (including floor) so we didnt want it to get overwhelming. And the nice part was, they then came back a week later to get the rest of the boxes and packing material. So if you have a relo person handling details for you, definitely talk to them about the options that might work best for you. Also key for me, my mom came (also cross country so we paid) to help with LO for a week while I unpacked. I was also 8w pregnant and sick but if you don’t have help just expect it to take a while to get settled! Good luck!!

Oh and save *all* of your receipts and documentation for anything related to the drive or moving ... I usually do our taxes but we paid someone that year because all the relo (some counts as income) made it complicated.

We also moved to a new place where I didn’t know anyone. (Plus it was hot summer and with being morning sick I was really out of it.) My best resource was finding the local mom’s group which had a fb page. I was able to start asking questions even before moving (stuff like pediatrician recs) and then once I got here, figure out kid activities to keep us busy, plug into playgroups, figure out preschool, etc. It still took me a long time to really make friends and feel grounded here but it helped! I don’t have a strict schedule but like to plan at least one activity a day out to stay sane (doesn’t have to be a big deal ... library story hour, grocery shopping, whatever).

We just downsized (only by 20% though) and we went through everything we owned pretty much piece by piece. We automatically got rid of anything we hadn't used in a year or more. We didn't keep duplicates (i.e., only kept our day to day dishes and not the fancy ones.) We also pared down (four sippies instead of eight). We got rid of a lot of clothes and books, too. It doesn't sound like a lot, but we ended up needing three donation pick ups, each 10-15 boxes/bags.

I’m just outside Buffalo but went to SUNY Geneseo for college. Most of our college friends live in the Binghamton, Rochester, and Ithaca area and grew up there so I’m fairly familiar. It’s a super pretty area. Let me know if you have any general good town, school district, etc questions!

We are officially relocating from the PNW to the Finger Lakes region of New York. I would love any advice you have on a few subjects.

1) Does anyone live in this area? If so I’d love to connect off of HB to talk about the region.

2) We are being relocated but I’d love any tips on moving cross country. We will likely be downsizing to a house half the size of our current home so purging tips would be great. We are driving not flying.

3) I will be a SAHM for at least the first 6 months. I have a 3 year old DD without any friends of family. What do your weekdays look like? I’d like to get us on some kind of schedule.
