1. Community feel (for me this is what makes me love where I live).
2. Schools
3. Crime rate
4. Location

1. Crime rate
2. Schools
3. Distance to family/friends
4. Affordable living (housing, etc...) (in relation to #1 and 2)
5. Location (area of the country, urban/suburban/rural, etc...)
6. Community feel (family-friendly, green, hip and trendy, etc...)
7. Population size/demographics
8. Amenities

I interpreted "location" as being proximity to civilization (grocery stores, parks, etc.) and "amenities" in relation to housing developments, which we didn't want to be a part of.

1. Safety, Schools, and high standards (seem to all kinda go together).
2. Affordable (we can't afford the top area with #1 school, but we can afford #2)
3. Location within that area of town/neighborhood. (we didn't want a cookie cutter neighborhood with no yard)
4. Distance to amenities (don't want an hour commute or to the grocery store)
5. Distance to family
6. Community feel (I just think this is captured by this point).

We bought our house and identified the top 3 parts of town to live in. From there we ruled out #1 because it was too expensive and too far from downtown and our friends and family. We started looking at area #2 and found a great neighborhood we wanted to be in. We double checked and made sure it was close to things like grocery stores, etc and we were sold. My husband didn't want a neighborhood so we don't have sidewalks but I'm happy that we have street lights.

1. Crime rate, Schools -- which typically go hand in hand
2. Distance to family/friends
3. Affordable living (housing, etc...) - unfortunately this seems inversely proportional to crime rate/schools
4. Location (area of the country, urban/suburban/rural, etc...)
5. Population size/demographics

@highwire: The weird part is that some neighborhoods are great, but they might border on a really bad neighborhood. Ugh, I can't believe I didn't research this area more thoroughly before my husband started applying for jobs, but it has a reputation for being safe, conservative and family-friendly. It's definitely family-friendly (great!) and super conservative (which we can live with) but it's not nearly as afe as I thought it was...

@Honeybee: Ugh the robbery, burglary, auto theft thing seems almost worse than violent crimes since that means people are definitely wanting to come into my home...

@blackbird: I was thinking like shopping, activities, etc... close by.

My main problem here - We're looking to relocate to a place that fulfills literally every part of our wishlist (great location, closer to family, very affordable, good schools, family-friendly, etc...)... but I justdiscovered yesterday that the crime rate is pretty high. Certain neighborhoods are really good, but the overall area is not so good. It's not necessarily violent crime, but property crimes (e.g. robbery, burglary, and auto theft) that make it one of the highest crime rates in the whole country. :/ I'm not sure where this ranks for me, for if it changes my mind about relocating to this area...

Our goal was a forever home so family friendly, good school was important.
1. Crime rate - I think this should be most important!
2. Schools - definitely next on the list for the kiddos
3. Distance to family/friends - We have to be near family.
4. Location (area of the country, urban/suburban/rural, etc...) not really as important as the house. We were open to city/suburbs/rural
5. Affordable living (housing, etc...) - obviously
6. Community feel (family-friendly, green, hip and trendy, etc...) I would want a family friendly neighborhood
7. Population size/demographics - not important at all
8. Amenities - not important. Not interested in living in a sub development or a "community" with HOA fees for pools, tennis courts etc.

Location (due to our jobs)
Crime rate Distance to family/friends
Schools
Affordable living (housing, etc...)
Population size/demographics
Community feel (don't really care, if we're near a good school, it's naturally child-friendly)
Amenities (not sure what you mean by this? we own a home so we don't have amenities like apartments do)

We live in a suburb of a big city that has a low crime rate and good schools. Our subdivision has a mix of retired folks and people with school aged children. We're about 30 minutes from DH's family. It's one of the nicer suburbs, so we don't have a gigantic 3500 sq foot home (not that I'd want to clean that, ha!) but we aren't cramped, either.
