@AprilK: We were given the listings of some in a cozy looking neighborhood. Hoping it isn't too bad Indy 500 weekend. Although we used to live Ann Arbor and Columbus so drunken folks are really nothing new.

@MrsRcCar: Ah, got it. I think that makes sense and is totally smart. I have a girlfriend that lives in speedway and she loves it, but they don't have kids. So I know there are some nice areas for sure. And the area is reasonable from a price perspective and really conveniently located as long as you don't mind a bunch of drunk people around the weekend of the Indy 500 :happy:

@AprilK: We are looking to rent for now. We don't want to commit to buy anything with DH's career options so open. We aren't sure we are staying in Indy once he is done. Although we aren't opposed to staying either. If he gets offered a job in Indy then we will be more concerned about schools. N won't start kindergarten until maybe fall of 2017 depending on birthday cut offs. DH's program ends June 2017

@meredithNYC: I was about to say that. It would take forever to get from those areas to his school if it's on the west side. Every morning the radio guys talk about the same areas being congested, I-69 being the main culprit.
@MrsRcCar: There are some good pockets of speedway but some bad ones too. Are you renting for now? If you are buying you should think about schools anyways and IPS just isn't that great. I'd push for more Avon options.

@MrsRcCar: Good luck!

Personally, I would stay away from the Northside as it's a traffic nightmare. It is very popular - realtors tend to push people towards Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, etc. since it's mostly new housing and good schools, but the sprawl is crazy. And if you don't need the schools so much, it's probably not worth spending as much on housing there, you know?

We just moved from Indy! We had a condo downtown though and thoroughly enjoyed the short time we lived there. It's such a neat city. We walked along mass ave, went to the canal often and just enjoyed the place! We didn't have kids yet so probably won't be able to give good advice from that perspective.

I am from Indianapolis and am happy to help (live on the south side in Southport)! I looked up the school information too and if it's on the west side you'd probably be best off in Plainfield or Avon. Both are very close to each other and very affordable.. and good schools! My sister lives in Avon off of Rockville Road and Raceway in a nice little subdivision and loves it.

As for doctors there are IU Health West (http://iuhealth.org/west/) and Hendricks regional (http://www.hendricks.org/).

Groceries - Marsh and Kroger tend to be the major ones but you can also get groceries at Super Target, Meijjer or Walmart, pretty standard. I think Avon is supposed to get a Trader Joe's soon but I'm not totally sure. There are a few nicer grocery stores on the north and south sides like Whole Foods, Fresh Thyme and Earth Fare but you can get alot of really good stuff at Kroger, Marsh and Meijer and those are all over the place and easily accessible.

As for fun things to do with the kiddies, I'd recommend http://indywithkids.com/

It will be great! We moved here from Chicago three years ago and LOVE Indy! Let me know if you have any other questions!

@MrsRcCar: Okay, so first of all, don't be afraid about the relocation! Indy is a friendly city in general, and definitely family-friendly. I think like a lot of places in the Midwest, it can be hard to meet people only because a lot of people have lived there their whole lives and already have a group of established friends. That said, if your husband is in school he should easily be able to meet fellow students and hopefully their wives/partners.

It looks like his school is on the West side of the city? I'm not as familiar with that side of town since I'm from the East side, but I do have family in the West side suburbs. I think a good bet would probably be Brownsburg, Avon, Danville, or Plainfield - depending on how far out you want to be? Those are all nice suburbs with tons of families. They're also easily accessible to downtown via 465.

Living closer to downtown can be harder since a lot of the areas near the city are still a little sketchy - particularly with kids. Some places have been gentrified, but I notice it's mostly still childless people in their 20's living there and they're in condos/apartments rather than houses. There are exceptions, but not a lot.

Now the hard part: I need help finding neighborhood to live in, where to shop for groceries, doctors for myself and our little ones, fun things to do in the area, and favorite places to eat.
