@purrpletulips: Just seeing this - you're welcome!! I hope you love it here. We used to live in Glen Allen and it's really nice. We're hoping to move back there in the next year or two!

@Littlebit @MFA_LADY: Thank you so much for advise. We will be down that way this weekend to get a feel for the various areas and meet with some realtors. I am excited about this venture for our family. The advise on places to live is pretty much in line with everything we've been told by DH's future coworkers. His office will be in Glenn Allen so the west side seems to be most suited for us.

PS @LovelyPlum: did I know you used to live in Richmond? Now I'm sad that you don't live here now. ;)

Somehow I'm just now seeing this! You will LOVE Richmond--it's such a great city! People have given you awesome house-hunting advice already. I'll reiterate that city schools are really, really not great--but all the suburban systems right outside of the city are pretty top-notch.

My husband and I live in Henrico County (in an area known as "the West End"), and the location is awesome. We're really close to Short Pump (huge shopping mecca that I almost never go to because the traffic is so bad, haha) and also really close to the Fan (really pretty part of the city with lots of shops/restaurants/gorgeous houses).

Like @Littlebit said, there is always so much to do here. Congratulations to your husband on the new job--and welcome! :)

I used to live there...you'll like it! I worked in Hanover, but personally, I'm partial to Midlothian/Chesterfield suburbs. If you want more walkable areas, though, look in the Museum District. I have a friend with kids there, and they love it!

I'm a Richmond bee! There's another bee here that I know of - hopefully she'll chime in too!

I love living here! I agree with the places @mrs. 64: suggested. If you're looking for city living the most family friendly places will be the fan, and museum district. The homes there are older but have lots of charm! Schools aren't the best because they are inner-city. But lots of things to do.

If you're looking for suburbs I suggest Chesterfield (across the river), Glen Allen/Short Pump area, or Hanover. We currently live in Hanover - which has great schools - but we're looking to move back to Glen Allen in the next year or two. Chesterfield isn't an option for us because my husband refuses to move across the river.

Richmond has so much to offer! There are always tons of family-friendly events around the city, great museums, awesome food, shopping, festivals, outdoor concerts. DC is only an hour and half away and we're pretty close to Virginia Beach also! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need suggestions :)

I live about an hour from Richmond so I'm no help. I know there are a couple bees who do live there so I'm bumping in hopes they see this & can help!

I love Richmond! We used to live there and we miss it. There are a lot of great places to live- it really depends on what you are looking for. If you want the city the Fan, Museum District, and near west end are good places (though the schools are not the best after elementary school). There are also tons of suburban options in Henrico or Chesterfield counties. I think y'all will love it.

@purrpletulips: Congrats to your DH! I'm in VA, but 3 or 4 hours from Richmond. I hope some other bees can chime in and give you great advice! I personally want to make a trip to visit the science museum in Richmond this summer! http://www.smv.org/

DH has been offered a job with the company for which he is currently a contractor. It is an excellent opportunity for him but requires that we relocate. This move will give me the chance to stay at home with DD (4yo) and DS (21m). While I am apprehensive we are both excited for this new chapter. Any advice on places to look for a house, places to avoid, etc. from the bees would be appreciated.
