When my DH got an offer last year for an international move, we only had 6 weeks from when he got the offer to the movers emptying our apartment. The very first thing we did was deal with school. Since my husband signed the contract on the last day of school, we had to hurry to uneroll DS and then sign up DS and DD for school/preschool in the new location before both schools closed for summer. We were pretty certain which school they were going to go to in the new place, but I spent half a day researching other options just to be sure, and then we went ahead with our original choice. I also got in touch with the movers immediately. It was an employer paid move, so I had to get a few quotes and August is peak moving season so I had to get confirmation of a company + set a moving date ASAP.

We moved to a city of 8 million people, so we had no idea where we were going to live. I spent a lot of time looking at google maps and realator websites to get a feel for locations and prices. It was helpful to have those things in mind, but when we actually moved I worked with a few different agents and they did all the legwork.

Is it possible to sign up your son for activities on a week to week basis? It was possible last summer where we were living and most of his activities were kind of last minute. As for preschool, I would probably contact a few in the new area, explain that you are tentatively moving there and ask about pre-enrollment or wait lists.

@raspberries: Oh man I know, there's so much to do! Maybe it would help me to put together some options for each scenario. If I approach it like I do a work project and make a spreadsheet I think I'll feel better, and like you said it'll be helpful when I'm ready to make it happen.

Oh gosh, we're in the middle of this now (maybe slightly ahead of you since my husband accepted an offer in mid-April, and he starts mid-June.) It's so frustrating for everything to be up in the air.

My biggest piece of advice is to keep track of all the research you're doing, so you can jump on it quickly once decisions are made. I did so much research on daycares, preschools, doctors, apartment complexes, school districts, the housing market, etc. - my husband kept telling me I was getting ahead of myself, but it was SO useful to already have a list of apartments that met our requirements once we actually knew where he'd be working. Also, it made me feel a little bit more in control of things - I had lists for what all we needed to do if we moved vs. if we stayed, deadlines for registration for various things, and so on.

I'm a planner by nature and I'm going a little crazy waiting for something to happen in my job search. I've been applying for jobs in my home state for about 2 months now.

I currently have 1 solid opportunity back home that I did a video interview for on Friday. They said I should hear back by the beginning of the month. I also interviewed with a local corporation on Friday afternoon - a position I applied for before deciding to move. The local job would likely pay more than my current, but I'm unsure if I'll be asked back for the next phase of interviews.

I also have another position that I'm super excited about back in my home state that I haven't interviewed for yet, still waiting to hear back for a time to talk to the CEO by phone.

I've thought a lot about my moving timeline and I think we can make it work with a 1 month window from accepting an offer to the start date, but I'm not sure if I'll be getting an offer any time soon and I'm getting really antsy to make some decisions about my life. I need to decide if my son is doing any summer activities like swimming or sports. More importantly, I need to decide where he's going to preschool in the fall!

I've looked for apartments that are wheelchair accessible and there are some, but not a lot and they are on the more expensive side. I also still have no idea what part of the region I will end up working in, which of course is super important for apartment hunting and looking for preschools.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How can I find some grounding when things could change at any moment? I feel powerless right now. Tell me it will all work out!
