@Anagram: lol I think I'd do return to sender if someone sent a card addressed to Ralph!

It's reassuring to hear that others have had this situation and that its pretty common/normal. It really made me feel like they hated his name and were being disrespectful to us (especially DH, who loves calling him Junior), but it sounds like its just a weird way of them trying to bond or something. Hopefully this passes soon.

I think the nickname thing is a stage for family members. One of my sister's in laws were very country and started calling her second son "boomer", because they didn't like the name she picked. For his first 2 years or so, they addressed all cards, presents and eve n an engraved toy box with the name Boomer.

But it didn't stick. No one else ever called him that (it sounds nothing like his real name) and he ended up being the least "Boomer" kind if kid of all time.

Like...they were hoping for a rough and tumble cowboy grandson....and got a little boy who loved barbies, dress up, and his mom's makeup.

Heh.

I think you should be direct. My brother and SIL named my nephew a family name, and she was very clear that my nephew was to be called by his full name. No nick names, no middle names, nothing. And, our whole family has been respectful and has done that. My father struggled a little in the beginning (because it is also his name, my brother's name, my grandfather's name etc), but after awhile he just got on board. If she hadn't been clear about it, I think that there would have been many nicknames.

I think the nick naming stage is pretty normal, with both my LOs everyone went through a phase of calling them little nicknames. But, now they are both referred to by their name.

I would just let it slide, I doubt any will stick. But, if it really bothers you that much then say something.

I feel your pain a little - FIL and GFIL keep calling Em 'Red'. As in "Hello there, Red." It annoys the crap out of me. I realize they are thrilled the red hair legacy has continued but seriously - just because FIL and GFIL are/were called Red does NOT give them the right to bickname our daughter.

Besides. We already nicknamed her Squeekie. So there.

Meh, they'll give up eventually. Your child will be know by what you call him. Ignore the others. Or be a little passive aggressive and when someone asks 'where is Ralph?", look at them like they have sprouted an extra head and say "who?"

Ralph was something he pulled out of the air entirely.

I get that Junior is kind of juvenile but LO is 7 weeks old, he can have a juvenile nickname! I wouldn't want him to be interviewing for jobs as Junior but for now, I think it's appropriate.

Sigh. Family.

Argh. That would irritate me. Especially the Ralph and brother Jr. WTF?! Some of my family has been giving him nicknames. Calling him by his shorter name when I'm not sure that's what I want him to go by. Can you just tell them not to call him those names anymore?

DH's step mom is always wanting to call P Penny, which I am NOT okay with!!! I've always dealt with people wanting to call me something else though so I don't ususally freak too much about it AND my pawpaw renamed ALL the grandchildren.... G's name in their house is actually "Irving" and mine is, well.. totally made up! It was clearly a term of endearment though so it was welcomed.

I hope that by you sticking to your guns people will lay off & start calling him by his right name!

I really hope Ralph doesn't stick. That one annoys me the most. Eventually we will probably call him a shortened version of his first name but for now, Junior is what we like. When he was born weighing 4lb, 4oz, calling him by his formal first name didn't seem right.

DH flipped his lid at his family. DD's name is Audrey, simple enough right? DH's father wanted to call her Al because of her middle name, his sister wanted to call her Aubree (umm why cant you just call her Audrey?) and his mom wanted to call her Leyna (middle name) DH told his family to stop because her name is Audrey and thats is what they will call her. That shut them up.

Ugh, I would be SO annoyed! I would probably get sassy and correct them every time they used their own version of the name. MIL likes to say that DD has a fat belly whenever she sees her (in a joking/loving way, babies do have big round bellies), but it bugs me sooo much (body issues much?) so I always make a snide comment about how she's going to make her self conscious too early.

Ugh! My son is a Junior and for now, we call him Junior.

Everyone is trying to rename him! My grandma calls him a shortened version of his first name, my aunt calls him by his initials, my uncle decided he looks like a Ralph (uh wtf?) and my cousins decided he looks like my brother so they call him Brothersname Jr. (how insulting to DH?!)

So frustrating. DH and I are his parents and WE get to choose his name. Everyone else named their kids and I've never put in my $0.02 (though my cousin picked out some truly hideous names).

What would you do?
