@JoJoGirl: We got it at BRU. The one we got fits convertible seats as well, so it is pretty big. But it doesn't look as big with just the infant seat in it. We figured we might as well get one that fits convertible seats, too, so that we can use it for a long time.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!! I guess we are taking it..

@septca: We've been to a few islands and this one in particular is actually not steep or hilly, very different from the others :) If we were going back to St. Lucia or something I'd be nervous about having her in the car even IN her car seat! I added that option only because some people apparently do that, although i know DH would NEVER agree to it.

@JoJoGirl: Gotcha. Well I will say that if you're already gate checking the stroller, the car seat shouldn't add extra time. Maybe you'll get lucky and it won't be a full flight... then you can bring it on the plane :)

I would take yours with you. You can check a stroller or car seat for free if you're traveling with an infant. We bought an awesome Brica car seat bag (it can be worn as a backpack and is really nice and sturdy). The best part is it has a huge zipper in the front that we put a bunch of clothes in. So we got to check that stuff for free, too :) That way you also wouldn't have to worry about lugging it through the airport or between gates.

If you're not bringing much carry-on luggage, I would take it and gate check it. We went to AZ when LO was 5 months old and brought the car seat, but (among 3 adults) we had 5 carry-on bags, plus the stroller and car seat. It was a pain.

We went to Europe when LO was 11 months old and rented a car seat with the car, since DH didn't want to go through the hassle of carrying it again. When we rented the car, there was only 1 rear-facing car seat available. It wasn't really gross, but it was awkward to install and get LO in. He screamed every time we put him in.

@Pepper: Well, only prob with this is the main reason we don't want to baggage check is we are worried about our short connection (and will be screwed if we get down there with no car seat).

@JoJoGirl: Yep. At least Southwest was able to. They just take it to the next plane with the other luggage (They'll put one of those pink 'transfer' tags on it). I just picked it up at the gate at my home airport.

Do you have a snap and go or a friend who will let you borrow theirs? We went to the Caribbean in September, and borrowed a snap and go - that way we could use the car seat as part of the stroller in the airport rather than having to lug it around in addition to an umbrella stroller.

FWIW, not sure which island you are going to, but you will definitely want a car seat. Most C islands are *really* steep and hilly and the drivers are maniacs - I would have felt very uncomfortable without a good car seat.

Also, since you have a short connection, you can ask them to unload the stroller (and car seat if you can't bring it on the plane) in the Carribbean. No need to grab it in between flights if you're going right to the gate. That's what I did, anyway!

We rented a carseat and it was totally fine and clean and super easy to install (expiration date and carseat manual included!), but this was in Ohio- I don't know how different any standards in the Caribbean are? I would check reviews from other travelers about the rental car company, I'm sure someone would mention their experience.

Ultimately, I would bring yours and just check it straight through with your luggage. In NO way ever would it be a good idea to carry her on your lap in a car though.

Bring and gate check the car seat alone with the stroller. I just flew (alone) with LO, and it wasn't a pain to bring it. In fact, since the flights weren't full, I was able to bring it on the plane (even though LO was a lap baby). It was so nice to be able to sit him down while I ate or went through my bag, etc. additionally, it's just nice to have your own car seat to use in the car since you're already familiar with it.

I would definitely take & use your own. You just can't know the history of a rented seat, if you have all the necessary pieces to install correctly, manual, that it for sure won't be expired, or that there won't be a mistake and for some reason you not get a seat.

I'd also take my seat to the gate & see if by chance it can be accommodated on the plane (you can even call the morning of your flight to see if they flight is full).

I'd get a cheap seat and designate that as your travel seat, something like a Cosco Scenera or similar. I never travel with my regular seat because I am too paranoid it will get lost and then I'll be out $$$.

I would also practice a seat belt install, because I have no idea if the car would even have LATCH or ISOFIX.

We are going to a Caribbean island in a couple of weeks for vacation (yay!). LO will be 7 months old and we are having a hard time deciding what to do about a car seat while we're down there. She's still in an infant/bucket seat. Originally we were planning to rent one with our rental car, but I'm getting a lot of feedback that those seats can be gross/old/dangerous/hard to install etc and we should gate check our car seat with our umbrella stroller.

We have a VERY short connection in Miami and I am nervous about having one more thing to lug around, but since we're already gate checking the stroller, I guess it won't add MUCH time?

Also, we don't have a seat for her on the plane, so will be wearing her as much as she'll let us.

Thoughts?
