It is similar but so much worse. Basically you have a skull splitting headache when sitting up from which you get no relief. Mine lasted 1-2 weeks after delivery. The longer you sit up the worse it gets. The only thing that helped me were painkillers which just made me sleep anyway.

I know Mrs B has a VBAC unplanned because of this very thing! I'm not opposed to laboring again I'm just hoping I don't end up with another spinal headache!! That was honestly the most difficult part of my c section recovery!!!

I have had three c-sections at this point. The first was unscheduled and was after pushing for over an hour, I had a regular epidural for it.
My second was planned, but my water broke on its own at 37 weeks and 1 day. My water broke at 5:30 in the evening and DS was out by 9:30pm. I got a spinal, but it wasn't very memorable.
My third was planned as well, and this baby chose to wait. So, it was really weird walking into the hospital knowing the baby was coming out by a certain time. Even with my pervious history, they would not schedule the c-section earlier than 39 weeks. This spinal was a little more memorable, and I wouldn't say it hurt. I was just super nervous about it. I remember they asked if I could feel anything and if it was hot or cold. I remember responding with "I can feel the pressure but not the temperature" and they were like "good answer" and started the surgery immediately after that.

I had a c-section with #1 because she was breech. (I did go into early labor with her 6 weeks early, but my water never broke, thankfully, and I ended up going full term.) My daughter is now 13, but I have no memory of the spinal, so it must not have been THAT bad. Lol.

I chose to have a c-section with my second. With my history of early labor, I wanted to schedule it early, but they wouldn't allow me. My doctor only schedules c-sections within a week of the EDD. As suspected, I went into labor in my 37th week...my water broke and everything! I was still able to have a repeat c-section without issue. Although to be honest, I was soooo nervous I wouldn't get to the operating room on time! Things were progressing quickly, and we were waiting for the anesthesiologist to get out of a different surgery before we could start mine!

I'm currently pregnant with #3, and my doctor has recommended a c-section again. I'm about halfway through the pregnancy, and I'm totally fine with having another c-section. I've only had positive experiences with them. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I just had my repeat c section. I didn't go into labor but it was moved up from 39 weeks to 37 1/2 weeks because of low fluid. The spinal was barely any discomfort compared to the actual procedure and recovery b

I was terrified of going into labor with my second(it was doubtful, since I didn't with my first). I asked my OB what to do if I did, and he said to just get to the hospital as soon as I could. I just did NOT want to labor.

My first, I had an epidural, and they could have put that thing in with a shovel for all I cared. but my scheduled C-section...the spinal hurt sooooooo bad! BUT, it's because I had such horrible back pain/tenderness from pregnancy, that the anesthesiologist couldn't believe how tender I was just from him TOUCHING my back. so I don't think my experience was normal.

@Boogs: I didn't have any medications the first time. I didn't have any issues with the spinal. Like I mentioned above, I was in serious active labor (and also hadn't had any medications) by the time the wheeled me in for surgery and I remember telling the doctor I couldn't sit still, he was totally calm and said take one deep breath and blow out slowly, I did and it was literally instant relief! So it was no big deal, I did vomit the first time I got out of bed later but the nurse said it was due to one of the pain medications they give during the surgery. Once I started eating and sitting up more I felt fine.

I am leaning toward an RCS. I had a scheduled section at 39 weeks because my first was breech.

I am saying this as someone who has absolutely no threshold for pain: the spinal was the easiest thing in the world. My flu shot the week before hurt worse.

I had a kick ass team of doctors who made sure I was at ease. One nurse held my hand & my OB held the other. It felt like it took less than 5 minutes to complete.

They use a 22mm needle and it's TINY.

the only thing that kinda freaked me out was seeing my husband. They told me he'd come in once the surgery started, and I didn't have a clue that they'd done anything. In hindsight, there was a guy who was poking me from my toes up to see if I could feel it. I could at first, but he stopped asking and I stopped responding, and all of a sudden there's my husband.... Which meant they cut, and I was like YOU DIDNT TELL ME!!!

I wondered this myself, I went into labor at 38 weeks last time on my own. I also didn't have a spinal. @Veggiemama: How was the spinal for you? Had you previously had an epidural you could compare it to?

I didn't have a repeat c-section but was supposed to have a scheduled c-section for my second birth. For my first birth I didn't go into labor until 42 weeks so when my c-section was scheduled for 39 1/2 weeks my midwife/OB said it would be great, there was little chance I would go into labor early...but I totally did! The day I turned 39 weeks I started having crampy contractions, I was in denial that it was labor until that night, when we finally went to the hospital I was a 5 and in active labor by the time I had the spinal for surgery. I worried about being able to sit still for the spinal but it took one deep breath and the relief was instant!

My doctor doesn't schedule c-sections before 39 weeks but since you went into labor at 38 I am not sure what yours would do. I was kind of happy I went into labor because I felt like the baby was ready to come out then.

How many went into labor before your scheduled date? I went into labor at 38 weeks with my first and have no idea what will happen for #2 or if this is taken into consideration when scheduling a date?

Also what was it like getting a spinal when not having contractions? It was an awesome distraction for me last time. I pushed 3 hours and had a stuck baby so c section it was!
